Triumph TR6 - Distributor Rotor Failure

I got stranded in my 75 TR6 recently and had to resort to CAA to get home. Diagnosis indicated that there was a spark from the coil but not from the distributor. Installing a new rotor solved the problem. This is the second time in three years that this has occurred. Is it an indication of poor quality components or possibly due to a higher coil output associated with the use of a Crane ignition module?

call Jeff at Advance Dist.
He makes the best out there.
If you are using an EI setup ,no way can you use a Bosch. Didn't say you were. Just you can't.

What's your rotor look like when you pull it out Barry?

As Don indicates, I would think an EI rotor would be of a construction to handle the higher voltages whereas the standard ones are not.

Thanks for the feedback. The rotor still looks relatively new with no visible surface tracking - possibly broken down below the brass contact arm. The inside of the new cap I installed three years ago still looks as clean as when it came out of the box. Needless to say, I bought an additional rotor for the glove box!

That sight looks familiar Barry and for a similar reason. On our way back to Ontario from BC the car started to buck and missfire on the way up the Fraser Canyon. We made it to Kamploops before it died right in front of a roadside motel/hotel... thank you. My new distributor cap which showed no trace of failure was defective but thankfully the local Napa boys had one in stock. The buck and hesitation etc. would only occur after the engine was hot. I was running with the Pertronix points replacement kit and the stock coil was putting out as it should.

I know this does not help you but thanks for the reminder to put a spare (with rotor) in my boot. Thank goodness for CAA/AAA.

I have been using the OE rotor since I put the Pertronix in back in 1999. I am on my second one since then but for sure not due to failure...just wanted to put a new one in.
