Triumph TR6 - Engine Vacuum

Hi,
I've just installed SU's and have low vac ..not enough to pull the dist retard back to drop the idle. When I had the Zeniths on there I had 17 to 20 vac but now it's less than 10..everything is tight as far as I can tell.
Any one done this conversion ??
Thx

Where is your vacuum source coming from? I beleive it should be "ported" vs. manifold. Check that you using the correct source (I beleive it should be located just behind the throttle butterfly). Possibly the port is blocked with crud?
I think many also abandon the vac. retard altoghther and readjust the timing.

Hey Charley sounds like something isn't right.

Charlie,

Are you checking your vacuum with a guage located at say the brake booster vacuum feed right in the manifold? If 10" is what you are getting and the butterfly's are closed it sure sounds symptomatic of a vacuum leak somewhere...But I would expect that it would be running quite lean. If you are at the ported vacuum fitting, as mentioned above, you wouldn't see much "pull" until you get more airflow through the carbs and across the ported vacuum fitting.

Just some things to think about. Let us know what you find.

BTW...thanks again for helping me with my carb mixture adjustment. It's running great now.

The dist gets it's vac from the botttom of the rear carb..and they have been rebuilt.
I double checked the valve clearance and they are approx 10 thou.leaning on the snug side.... I will reset them a shade looser to see if that is the problem

As for abandoning the retard I disabled it last year and reset the timing but the car ran terrible.
I'll try it again tonite
thanks guys
