Triumph TR6 - Extra vacuum for brakes

Hello Gents

I've started a new thread here as a continuation of the 'toyota caliper and brembo disks' thread, where we seemed to be getting onto an interesting topic.

It might be worth knowing that the fuel injected saloons had this vacuum 'reservoir' arrangement when coupled with the auto transmission (which was never available with the TR6).

The combination of the auto trans, a cold morning requiring choke (and high idle) and probably a stop sign at the bottom of the hill a minute after leaving the house, would have got the engineer's back to the drawing board pronto (minimum brake boost and the auto champing at the bit - holy sheeet!!)

The maximum vacuum available to the servo is when the engine is idling - just when you don't really need it. As the revs increase and the manifold pressure is relieved by opening the butterlies (in the case of a PI), the vacuum reduces.

The arrangement had a non-return valve at the manifold end and then ran a hose to a 'T' connector, one side going to the the canister, the other to the servo.

The reservoir (which was mounted between the headlight and the radiator inside the front bodywork) was approx 1' high and about 5" in diameter - the smaller the tank is, the less 'reserve' you have available to draw on.

Although it was fabricated similarly to a small fuel tank, I think it was way over-designed as the pressure from the manifold is only a maximum of about 11" of mercury.
(I don't know how this converts to psi , but I would be surprised if it is more than about 5psi.)

When it comes to the TR, my motto is "there is always room for improvement!!" -- Guess what I'm going to be fiddling with next hibernation??

Cheers

Roger

as a point of interest,

1 Hg = .5 psi

hence 20Hg = 10#psi

Anything could be used with the right fittings and near zero loss till needed.

I'll see what I can chase up and re-post.

Pics are easy when I can find the right model - don't really know how easy that will be as I am pretty much a 'TR' man.

'Stay tuned'

Spot on Bill!!

The only difference between this and the original is the quality!!

Also, the original only had one hose connection so the vaccuum was established by the inlet manifold - this pic shows in/out (one with check valve??) - maybe the vaccuum is via air pump or pre-charged before the race - I'm only guessing.

Hi Roger

Can't remember exactly but we put one on a friends drag mustang with a very radical cam 7 or 8 years ago.
Vac was picked up from manifold via check valve and then out to the booster line past the normal check valve to give the extra capacity. Equal vac all is good. We also ran a line to a vac gage in the car since they had a hole for that.

Take note I fix electro-mechanical devices on a daily basis and I tend to forget the situation until I have the problem again. Saves the old brain tissue. Wife says I'm just an idiot. But since I don't have one here to check the theory in real time were it counts please double check.

On another note watch using old propane bottles. Cab driver here died Saturday in a minor rear end crash. Cab was dual gas and propane and although propane system was not used anymore there was enough when lines ruptured to ignite the gas tank. Can't see a problem with the small ones. But guys like JimD might go the bigger is better route 2 - 20 pounders in the trunk.
Good Zing Bill! I'm outa here :)

Ouch, would someone please remove that from betwixt my shoulder blades?

Be nice to me Bill, I've only just bought two more Spits and one day YOU'LL need a part for that secret Spit you have. <G>

I was thinking I'd just go with one 50 pounder.
