Triumph TR6 - Fan Belt Replacement
Have just replaced fan belt on my 1976 TR6. Took me most of the day & damn near killed me. I also think I may have damaged the new one when I was trying to force it past the rack and pinion steering and frame member and may have to do it all over again (!). Is there an easier way to do this? I jacked up front end, jacked up engine separately, slathered grease one everything, loosened frame member bolts and radiator struts, & still had a hell of a time. I still can't believe such a relatively simple thing could be so complicated and difficult. Thanks in advance. |

TG: If you are a member, see Archives - Fan Pulley - October 2002. Same problem but advice on solution from guys who have been there. If you're not a member just join up. Good luck, Bob 1976 |

You mean there is a technique Bob? :-) I took the same approach as TG. Maybe I will check out the archives next time. it is a real pain the derriere TG |

Never tried it myself but according to the posts, seems to make a very miserable job just slightly less miserable and without slathering grease and jacking engine :0) Cheers, Bob 1976 |

Pull the motor. Makes it a piece of cake |

I'm surprised that no one has chimed in about the right thing to do.... Jack the front end up at the center of the front cross-member, and loosen the bolts on the cross-tube. 4 bolts on each side if my memory serves me correctly. That allows room to get the belt past the pulley. I've seen cross-tubes with belts duct-taped in place by disgusted owners that didn't want to deal with a roadside repair....and read comments by others that it's a common practice! Hmmmm....my belt is over 5 years old now..... |

Of course I have an electric fan |

Well Don, as long as you don't try and convince me that your TR-6 water pump and alternator are driven by electromagic I can along with it. |

Dag gone you Steve. You made me go down and look at the motor. Shuz-But ,your right. Shows how long it's been since I worked on that motor. I take it all back. It is a pain in the a$$. I reiterate my earlier post. Pull the motor |

The older ones call for a thinner belt and it's easy. I suppose that's cheating! |
