Triumph TR6 - Fan pulley

A few months ago I fell victim to a broken fan belt. Had not noticed before but the fan pulley is within a quarter inch of the crossmember. I had to move the crossmember enough to thread the new belt. Not too much trouble moving out of the way it was the reassmebly that gave a bit of difficulty. I looked at a few other sixes over the weekend, and noticed that the pulleys and crossmembers were a considerably further apart. Perhaps as much as three inches. Is it abnormal to have the pulley this close? Is it specific to the year of the car? Mine is a 75. Is it possible to have the same clearance that I saw in the others without too much trouble? Thanks for any input.

Mine is the same as yours and I have overdrive tranny. I do not think this makes a difference as I did not have to change the motor mount position or the tranny mount position. Mine is a '71. I remember having difficulty also putting on a new belt. It was a case of "2 beers later" along with a few choice words. I think it is also a case " what u see is what u get". I am not sure how you would get 3 inches there. The pulley changed to 1/2" at engine #CF 35000 and that looks to be 1975. But only change was for a wider belt ( 3/8" to 1/2"). The main cross member is not adjustable unless you elongate the holes...this is next to imposible.
Hope you bought the best belt you could find.
Who out there in BBS land has this 3"s of clearance and what year is your 6 ?

Hi Ashley

Do not know of any stock TR6 with enough clearance to put on a belt without removal of crossmember tube. But someone may have come up with something. My Haynes manual recomends securely tying an extra to the crossmember so that it can be more easily fitted at some future date.

Getting the crossmember back into place is easier if you put a jack with board under the center of the lower frame crossmember and lift a bit before you remove it. As soon as you remove it the car and engine weight on wheels flexes everything inwards.

And just think of the poor guy who designed it having lunch with the assemblers in factory. Whooo that was bright Guv. A bit to much ale last night huh.

Hi guys,
I had a similar problem with evidence of occasional rubbing of the rotating fan pulley shaft against the top of the rack. This led me to check condition of engine mounts which were poor and sagging. Replaced engine mounts which resulted in increase to about 1/2" clearance above rack, easily enough to change fanbelt! Suggest you check your engine mounts.

I also had the same rubbing. I checked the mounts and they seemed fine. Will probably change anyway. Rubbing only occurred under hard braking. I recently changed bottom end bearings and thrust washers. No more rubbing. I did read the second belt strap on thing in the Haynes manual. Don't really like that idea though. I must admit that the clearance I saw on the other cars was probably not three inches but more than enough to pass another belt through.
Thanks,
Ashley

Now we are getting fish stories here.
Hay Ashley, if you cut the belt first it will be much easier to put on! (I will trade you problems).
Bill I recall hearing a story about that guy being stoned to death.
