Triumph TR6 - Frame repairs

Ok, so now I have the wings (F&R), doors, bonnet, bootlid, all off, the seats, carpets, hood off. I am having a jig made to fit between the B posts (across the tub) and connecting to the A posts, hopefully this will minimize any flexing. The rear of the frame from the breast plate to the back is totally gone. Has anyone ever attempted to do a half frame rebuild? Does anyone in Canada know of a good resource for the parts?

Les:

Obsolete Auto in Point Edward Ontario has a good line of frame repair parts. ( www.obsoleteauto.com ) You could also try Peninsula Auto in Toronto (??) but I haven't dealt with them. Obsolete can be pricey on some things. Actually, with the Loonie a little stronger lately, I got parts from Moss Motors in California cheaper than I could get them from Obsolete.eg; brake master cylinder. You've got to shop around. Maybe you could source out a good frame. May be cheaper in the long run. I thought I saw one a while ago in the Toronto Triumph Club classifieds.

Les, you should really think about trying to find a
whole good frame or even a typical slightly rusted frame instead of trying to rebuild half of a frame
from scatch. Unless of course you are a good welder.
I have found repairs on an existing rust damaged frame aren't all that bad if you have it chemicaly
dipped. All that is left is clean sound metal and then you weld in what is missing. I don't know how often
frames come available in Nova Scotia, but in Toronto area they are not uncommon. Try J.D. Auto in Etobicoke
(416)746-1048 (ask for Joe) or Trevor White at (905)
727-4009 or Ken Mason at (519)942-1722
Good luck,

You might also consider going to http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk and looking at their online catalog. They sell a number of different frame repair pieces for the TR5/TR250/TR6.

Hi Les,
When I did my frame rebuild, I fixed many areas with metal I had bent at my local sheet metal place. (can't remember the gauge - but it was thicker than OEM)

I then, cut and fit the new pieces as required and had them welded on. It was a lot of work - but as the frame was off the body -it wasn't too bad. My fear would be that the rear part of the frame is out of alignment- compared to the front.

If I wasn't so cheap - it would have been easier to buy a good used frame. Are you a member of Batans?

http://www.batans.ca/ Perhaps a source for a used frame?

good luck!!

To All,

Thanks for the comments and advice. Having looked at the drawings etc. I have decided to go on the hunt for a chassis. This also makes it easier to plan my overall restoration project.

Aivars.

I have considered joining "BATANS" in the local Kentville area, and maybe this might be the time. Even though this TR6 will not be on the road for sometime.

Thank too all

Les,
I know of a rust free TR6 Chassis but do not know cost or even if the guy will sell it. It's located in Huntsville Alabama so there'd be some carriage cost. If you want, I'll ask and advise.

Please check it out, as the frame is not too heavy it may not be to expensive to ship. However, I have to remember the find out the cost of import duty.

If there is a manufacturer in the US or Canada reading this, perhaps they want to start producing ready to go frames.

Les

Les,

there is no import duties from US for parts to old cars. Only our nice taxes and the broker fees.

I paid 11% duty on a "used" air filter casing, I called Revenue Canada, and yes they advised me that all parts imported from the US, wether new or used not manufactured in the US is subject to import tax.

Les:

I'd check that out again with Rev Can. Somebody over there is not doing their homework. Parts for "antique cars" are not subject to duty when shipped to Canada. You will pay a small customs handling fee; not too steep and GST but that should be all. I have a duty-free code around here somewhere, which I think applies to all parts in this category. I'll try to dig it out and send it to you.

Cheers,

To all,

I wasn't aware that there was no duty on "antique car" parts either. How old does the antique need to be to avoid paying duty?

Thanks,

Bob- You have opened a can of worms now.

25 years old + but must not be less than 15 years old to qualify for duty free import. YES all parts regardless of origin should cross the border "duty free". All packaging should be labeled with "antique car parts" and is also helpful for the dummy at Canada customs to see the "international Classification of Goods " number. A broker or your US parts supplier should have this number. I would think Fred at BAS would have this number memorized by now.
GST and PST will apply on the converted CDN dollar amount.

Les,
Paul Byler at paulb@paulsautoshop.net, 1-256-880-1685 wants $400.00 USD for his frame. He tells me that it is not "excellent", but in "good" condition, never bent and completely stripped. He purchased the car for parts, building others and finally the frame was left. Contact him directly if you have further interest. Paul runs a restoration shop and is quite knowledgeable on all things LBC.

This is good news to new rennovator, who has leaned away from parts from the US (E-bay). Now the hunt is back on.

Les (Gerard)
Yes good news but if Canada customs just sees it as car parts then they slap the 6% duty on it (the CDN equivalent). A guy from e-bay I strongly dought will help with giving you proper documents to avoid duties.

A PRO-FORMA invoice is required stating it is antique car parts, the country of origin, size and weight of the shipment, the International classifications of goods number, and the declared value of the shipment for tax purposes.
When I receive parts from the US (from a distributor who regularly ships to Canada) I only have to pay GST,PST collected by UPS driver. The shipping charges have already been charged to my VISA.

Guys:

Yes Don, a veritable can of worms but luckily Rick has bailed me out on this one. I have ordered direct from both Moss and TRF and not paid duty. Most of my parts are thru Len Drake due to my 15% discount. Yes, Len gives a 15% one year discount on Moss parts if you buy a car from him. Len gave me this info. When ordering you should ask the seller, especially Moss or TRF to label the parts as being for an antique car. The customs classification number is #8708 99 99 90 and the tariff code is 9966. They will know this but you should specify it in your order to be sure. Good luck!

Cheers,
Bob
