Hey folks,
here is a site that you usually need to get password from your public library. (I am saving you the trip)

It is a detailed and complete auto maintenance guide. I was amazed. try out the video portion.

[This post has been edited. The web site, username and password have been removed as they breach copyright and license terms]

At the risk of being a killjoy or playing the angel of gloom and doom, I would advise against going to that site using the supplied credentials. Having my own personal research librarian (aka wife), you get in to issues of copyright and licensing agreements when the credentials are misused.

As a case in point, she has told me about a few databases that the system subscribes to that HAD been available for use by library system patrons from home. Unfortunately, like this, the log in credentials were published on a BBS. As a result, the system usage suddenly far exceeded the subscription agreement. In one case, the library system's subscription was just flat out cancelled by the company. In the cases of the others, they only way they were allowed to keep the subscription was to change the access to be available from computers within the library only.

Bottom line is that if a bunch of people outside the system go there based on the posting, "greatfalls" and the local taxpayers that are paying for the subscription are going to get hosed. Go see if your system has it if you want or request that they subscribe, but don't hose "greatfalls."
SteveP

Huh??
Hello all it takes is for you to go to your own public library and get your own code....so do it then. Just trying to save you the gas money. Bottom line is that it is not illegal nor restricted. So enjoy all. ( and i know most of you already have) and spend some of your tax money you paid into.
thanks though Mr. Kiljoy.
Marcello

oops,
ya one more thing..there is no such thing as a paying member on this site. All you need is a library card. The site is free like your card is. ENJOY!!!!

Also, what does "taxpayers that are paying" mean? Isn't that you and me?
Marcello

It is incorrect to say that it is not illegal or restricted. Subscription services are subject to both copyright and licensed usage restrictions. In this particluar case "epnet.com" is a domain of EBSCO Publishing and is indeed a paid subscription service. As long as your library subscibes to that service and offers access to their patrons or if you happen to be in the "greatfalls" system, then by all means go use it.

The taxpayer that are paying are the local taxpayers of "greatfalls" in this instance. While I agree that both of us (along with everyone else here for that matter) are indeed taxpayers to whatever government entities have jurisdiction over our area of residence, unless you are are in the goeverning entity for the "greatfalls" library system, you are not one of those taxpayers.

The databases I referenced that now have restricted access and the one that was lost entirely were payed for by local taxpayers here. One of those that we used to be able to use from home and is now restricted to in library use only was indeed "epnet.com." How did it get this way? Because somebody published the library system's access information on a BBS just as you have done here. Again, I would ask that the people on this BBS not hose "greatfalls," but instead go check with their own local library systems.
SteveP

Nice site Marcello. Too bad it doesn't have TR's but my Volvos are there!

Steve,
Whatever. Lighten up it isnt a bank robbery or child porn it is a library for goodness sakes.

Thanks Tim.
Marcello

Marcello,

No, it's not bank robbery or kiddie porn, but it is illegal all the same and by posting it to this board you potentially opened the operators of this site up both criminal and civil liability under various copyright laws. I don't think that was your intent by any stretch of the imagination, but it is the reality of the situation presented. There are a number of people that rely on information presented here and the last thing that we need to do is something to endanger the boards existence.

I know from a bad experience we had work and things my resident research librarian has told me regarding the havoc that can be created for legitimate users due to unauthorized use of subscription services. It runs into costs to the legitimate users and can also result in loss of those service in addition to those costs. The EBSCO service is not free to the licensee, it is a fee based system with a licensing agreement for its usage. Contrary to your claim, there are paying members for that service. Don't believe me? Then contact EBSCO and see about getting a subscription for yourself, trust me, they will let you know rather quickly as to whether or not it is a "free" site.

The library system you linked to is not in Canada. Unless you maintian dual residency in the area of the library, you have no automatic entitlement to the services offered. If you wish to contact that library regarding a non-resident library card (for a fee), that would be one way to gain legitimate access. On the other hand, odds are that you can do this at minimal cost (as in no cost) by using the local system that is supported by your tax dollars. EBSCO stuff is in wide spread usage (at least in North America, can't speak for ROW), odds are that your local system subscribes and can fix you right up with access.

I'm through discussing whether it was wrong or not, you can be put out with me all you want. I tried to handle this in a reasonable manner, your responses indicated that you failed to appreciate the situation that you had created not just for the library system impacted but also to the operators and users of this BBS.

Steve "Killjoy"

To all, if anyone wants to discuss this further with respect to gaining legitimate access to this service, I can help out by providing you with more detailed information.
SteveP

I am speechless..
This is the last time I try to forward a cool info site for my BBS comrades. I just been told the the Librarians of America will contact the book mafia after me.

Steve I don't intend to get into a pissing match with you. This site is about Brit cars, and people helping people, if you have a political beef, or a PC war you are fighting take it to another site. You are well aware of my intent, it wasn't harmful rather helpful. It wasn't deliberate nor delinquent. I suggest you but away your library card dust off your TR6 and go for a cool off ride. life is to short to be worrying about stolen library user sites. You sure you drive a 70s car? Allow me to place a daisy in your rifle sir!
Marcello

I think we need to take Steve's point seriously. He was pointing out a potential problem for the local library users if their membership was withdrawn due to excess usage - he was not slagging you personnly, Marcello.

Marcello,
Not to beat a dying horse, but I gotta weigh in...Steve's right IMHO, and he presented his observations in a respectful, cogent, factual way. Recommend that you get beyond resentment at him taking you to task and really read what he was saying.

BTW, in my book stealing is stealing, no matter the value or who's doing the stealing. If it ain't yours, don't take it.

RealY?
How hypocritically it would be of all of us who enjoy all that the Internet offers.

Do we all believe all info gathered on CD 1 and 2 were donated?

How about all of us who have enjoyed Leslie's top down vol 1 and 2 music? Did we get written permission on from the artists?

Come on folks no one here suffered the loss of a library card. Also, if anything this should only teach the company to become better at what they do. I think they deserve to be pirated for the lack of research going to the web. They should know better to say "please do not use this site even though we all have access" People give your head a shake, if anything this will make them smarter and better because of this.
Marcello

Marcello..

It's time to move on! Let it go! No one was "hammering" you on this. The link has been removed anyway.

Our city's library has the service, and I'm glad the whole world isn't accessing it. Like previous posters, I agree that it is only for me and other taxpayers in my city.

There isn't any info on old cars like mine, but there is a ton of stuff that would be almost impossible to source on newer, more complex cars. Factory recommended procedures for common problems (defects?) that I didn't even know existed on my Dodge/Mitsubishi van.

I would hate to lose access to this info because I had not thought about the provider being cheated. It's a great information source for solving complex problems with a modern car.
Tom

I apologize to anyone who has been hurt and or offended by the posting. Again, my intentions were not deliberate. I simply passed on (with out looking into it)a site that I thought was free.

I also do think it was blown all out of proportion and we do need to lighten up on the whole matter.

I was warned many moons ago, when I purchased my TR6 that Brit car owners can be a little stuffy and strident, unlike the American muscle car scene I was brought up in.
Once again my apologies.
Marcello

Marcello,

Truth be told.. I would have bought an American muscle car if I could have afforded one. Before I bought the TR I was looking at Mustang convertibles. Way too much money at the time..and still going up. Back in my late teens I owned a couple of TR6's (used and not in very good shape and drove them through Michigan winters and destroyed them) so when I stumbled across this one I bought it. Reasonably priced and parts are plentiful. There is a big local American muscle scene around here (Detroit..go figure)and I take my TR to the gatherings. I get some comments but all in good fun. I get many complements too.

I would say most of the TR6 owners would fall under the classic car enthusiasts rather than just Brit car owners. These cars have been on North American soil for a LONG time. Mine brings back lots of good memories...the chicks loved it. I have also been to alot of Brit car events and have not noticed any more stuffiness than at the American muscle events..except maybe the Jag owners... just kidding..

I'm quite sure everyone knew your intentions were good so let's let this thread get to the bottom of the page and fall off into cyber space.

Guys:

Agree that it is time to put this rather gnarly post to rest but I've gotta weigh in too and try to get past who's right or wrong in this heated debate. Let's just look at this from another perspective. Marcello is a regular contributor with good input and advice and the best of intentions like all of the other regulars. Ditto for Steve, who's taken the time to offer lots of sage advice. Kudos to you both. There's no reward for your help so why do we do it? We're all in it for the cars and the camaraderie that this forum generates and it sure warms up a long, cold Winter (and Spring)to be able to talk TR6 on a world-wide forum. Did y'all notice that the TR6 board has more posts than all the others combined? It's a brotherhood and brothers will argue once in a while but at the end of the day they're still brothers. Hope all the ERA crowd don't get offended by the "brother" reference but the TR6 is a guy car after all. No need to apologize Marcello; you keep digging up good info. We're listening bro'. Shake hands boys.

GEESS
I go away for a week and all HELL breaks loose on this BBS.

HENRY
Sorry lad but I disagree. I got my LBC because I WANTED a LBC. Yes I appreciate an American metal Muscle car but my LBC gives me a GREAT deal of pleasure and I am very content with her....truth be told.

In the defence of my fellow Canuck
I do believe Marcello was just trying to give some information that might be of benefit to others who come to this BBS and take advantage of the entire groups information. I do no believe he had the intentions of circumventing (infringing on) any copyright material. HECK I have done it and have made the public apology for doing it. I certainly did not do it intentionally.
The City library is there for one purpose only and that is to supply information to ANYONE who walks through the door. I do not know what Marcello posted in his first post (it has been edited out) so I can not go there. If a library holds this information to be " classified" then maybe they should not let it be available on the WWW (WORLD WIDE WEB) at all and you can only access it if you go to your public library.

The world has changed SO MUCH with the WEB that the public library WILL become obsolete.

In my own defence. YES there is stuff on CD1 and CD2 that MAY be copyright material. If you think you are infringing on someones copyright material then I STRONLY suggest you DELETE all information that you might have acquired from me and or fellow LBC enthusiast via mail or Internet download.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT ME TO HAVE IT, US IT, OR READ IT, THEN DO NOT PUT IT UP ON THE WWW FOR ME OR OTHERS TO COPY IT for my personal use!
Just like Marcello, This is public information. Marcello is not trying to sell it for profit.

Oh Ya, Marcello, lighten up on us ...we are not RR owners, we are just the peons who own the smaller BCs.

Rick,

No problem.. My point was that we appreciate the Brit cars for the classics that they are and that we are not just Brit car owners but classic car owners as well.

For me I wanted the muscle for sure but I do enjoy my TR6 and everything that comes along with it. Remember since I had a couple of them it's a nostalgic classic for me.

Rick,
Thank you. I think you have a better way with words then I do.
Now how do I make this thread disapear......(oops i just added it to the top again)
Marcello

To me, the big irony of all of this is that almost everyone that participates in this BBS has or can readily obtain legitimate access to the information from EBSCO's Automotive Repair Resource Center (or Centre as they say for some versions). And I would further encourage people to take advantage of that legitimate access.

I got a bit more curious about this particular EBSCO product (it's a bit hard thinking of it as product since it exist in the ether, but it is a product all the same just like CarFax) and did some digging into it and where it was offered. There are several different versions of the product for different regions including European, Canadian and Australian specific versions.

As for availability, I spot checked several library systems in Ontario and found that most of the systems checked did indeed offer it. Several US systems were spot checked and they offered this service as well. One of those systems was the Great Falls, Montana system (the one whose log in credentials had been posted). Go do a quick and dirty search for them, it's easy. Then check out what they have to say about database access. It's pretty standard stuff for subscription service databases. Your library will have similar policies.

No Australian systems or European systems were checked, but since EBSCO has tailored versions for them, it's out there so go check your local system. All of this means that there is reasonably good chance that YOUR local library subscribes to this service using YOUR tax dollars and as long as you have a library account in good standing, you have legitimate access to it and may as well get some good out of those tax dollars you delivered.

As for libraries becoming obsolete, certain aspects will, but the library as an institution will continue. The library has throughout recorded history served as a repository of information. While there is a great deal of information out there in the electronic ether that is public domain, there is much more that is not. As individuals we cannot afford to subscribe to all of the things that we may need or want to look up, much as we may not buy every book that we want. But with its collective institutional footprint, the library can come much closer to that goal of getting us all of the stuff we need. I know from a work standpoint, since they forced us to give up most of our print documentation (thanks BSI and ISO 14001), we make much more use of the corporate library services.

By the way, Roger, here's to hoping this helps your head stop hurting since they have an OZ specific version.
SteveP

So how about that wacky weather we are havng folks...(??????????)
Marcello

I think it has turned out well, guys. Some of us probably didn't even know about the online car info from the library. I didn't until a couple weeks ago, either.

Don't feel bad, Marcello. We're just a bunch of guys talking about our cars.
Tom

Thanks Steve - I'm feeling a lot better now....

Hey Marcello - I can see your yellow flash.....yay!!!

Weather! Yuck. 6 deg.C today and foggy. Hope you're all having fun in the sun. I'm working on the rebuild in a damp garage. Weather sucks - hate ice and icebergs. They're only good for chipping off chunks to break up for your Scotch on the rocks. Yes, they are fresh water.
