Triumph TR6 - Front fender removal

Am working on a 1970 TR6.
Do front fenders normally bolt on and off a TR6 ? Similar to, say a MGB?

Previous owner had one fender removed when I picked up car. It seems that half of the headlight section is still attached to the front valance. A lot of rust in this area, but it appears to be welded to the valance, along with some bondo added.

I removed all bolts from other front fender and it still is hanging on in this same area.
Was it normal for factory to weld fender at this point or am I missing something?

Also, does anyone make lower repair panels for TR sixes?
I don't see them available from mother moss or the like.

How about a source for good used fenders?

Thank you for the input.

Dennis,
You say that you removed all the bolts from the wing (fender). Did you get the three bolts that attaches at the door frame and the one underneath the front of the valence? If you don't have TRF Volume 1 catalog, I highly recommend that you ring up John Swauger and he'll send you a copy. Might even for free if you order something. Used to be free, but now I think that John's got a price of like $9.95 on Vols I & II although II is unavailable until it's reprinted. Anyway these parts catalog have what are perhaps the best exploded drawings of the components of the TR-6 and will show you where all the bolts are for each piece. there should not be a weld at the light bucket to the wing, but the light bucket or surround is affixed to the piece around the grill.

Or you could get a copy of the Triumph Enthusiasts' TR6 cd and find all the data you'll ever need.

Search for the thread on the archives if you're a member. If not a member, sign up and search.

Yes, I believe I removed all the bolts you mentioned and the fender is loose up to the light bucket area.
But just so I'm clear on this, the fenders on TR sixes do bolt on and off?
Rear fenders also?

...and yes I searched the archives for fender removal, but came up empty.
I'll check into the roadster factory catalog. The bently manual I'm using does not have anything on fender removal.

where is the CD you speak of availble from?
This site?

Dennis,

The fenders do bolt on and off. Front and Back. There is a bracket behind the headlight cone that attaches the outer fennder to the inner fender using the hood hinge bolts. This might be what is binding or holding the fender on. The headlight should be removed for easier access to this bracket.

The body shop may have welded it to save time and effort . Hard to say not knowing the history.

I have some used fiberglas fenders from the TR6 I just finished rebuilding. These fenders date from a restoration in 1978. They are in good shape but not steel. If interested let me know.

Dennis,

here's a picture of the front fender mounts. http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/tr6/images/136a.gif

On the site (http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/cgi-bin/rimmer.bat?tr6/tr6indx) they tell you how many bolds there are. See nrs. 14,18,22,25.

Good luck

After chipping away the old repair bondo, it was apparent the PO or a shop man had welded the fender at headlight bucket point to the valance.
A little drilling and grinding made short work of it altho, as I suspected, both fenders are filled with so much bondo at this headlight area, they're beyond my repair capabilities. There is very little good metal left to work with. They just came off in pieces.

Michael,
If you send some pics, asking price, etc. to my home address, I wouldn't mind discussing those fenders further.
