Triumph TR6 - Front sealing block

I thought I would post this for feedback or if anyone is doing an engine rebuild...my experience. After rebuilding my engine, I replaced many parts with new. However I did not replace the sealing block, I used the origional. After a few months of driving the rebuilt engine, it developed a small oil leak in the area of the sealing block. This got prgressively worse, so I tore it apart 2 weeks ago, and found that the aluminum sealing block was warped. I did not notice this during the rebuild. This block has now been replaced with a steel block. So far no oil leaks. Was the aluminum block poorly machined or did it warp in the engine?

Pete, where'd you get the steel block?

Don,
I'm an all day person from the wee hours to the wee hours. Just took a moment to check in as a respite from staring at spreadsheets on my lunch break.

I just redid my engine to fix some oil leaks and found the same problem. A warped sealing block (you may remember when I was up at your place I had a couple of engine leaks)

I had the part shaved. Wish I had known about the steel replacement option. I was told that replacement blocks were not easily available.

Michael, it seems that this is a common problem, and I am of the opinion that the block warps from heat in the engine. You will notice that the aluminum block (at least mine) is not solid, but machined out, so I suspect is more vulnerable to warping??? The steel one that I put in is SOLID steel.
Too bad I did not know you had a tear down...I would have reccomended this to you.
Dang!!
