Triumph TR6 - Fuel consumption

Does anybody know what kind of fuel consumption is normal for a 2.5litre TR6 with twin SUs or what figures you typically get?
Mine guzzles it even when driving conservatively!!
Is 4degrees BTC at 800 rpm the correct figure for timing?

cheers

James, mine is terrible compared to others. I get around 14 if I'm lucky, but I think I'm running a bit rich.

Guys,
keep in mind that a US gallon is 3,8 liters,
and a UK Gallon is 4,5 liters! Can make a lot of difference. John is running around 16,5 in UK (but pays for the US gallons, lucky him !)

James,
A trip to the Oregon coast last summer (1200 mi round trip) yielded about 27 miles per gallon overall, there were a couple of sections we were cruising about 80-90 mph. (I'll never tell what state we were in, though! ;)
Mostly, we see about 22-23.

BTW, mine has HS-6's as well

I just got my TR6 back on the road and have run 3 tank full. fist tank gave me 100 miles. Replaced Webber DGVs and adjusted timing until if felt good (after having used a timming light). Second tank gave me 200 miles. Adjusted rear carb a little leaner, aligned wheels and got overdrive working. I'm sitting at just over 1/3 indicated and have 200 miles on this tank. I used to get about 25+ on my other TR6s.

Guys, Clive just looked at my engine and concluded that 5 of the 6 cylinders are "leaking" around the pistons. This may account for my poor gas mileage.

Unfortunately, it appears I need a motor rebuild. Clive is helping me figure this out and is a genius when it comes to these types of things.

Assuming I can afford the rebuild, I'll let you know what the mileage is on a newly rebuilt motor.

Hey, did Clive do a compression check? If so , just out of curiosity, what where the readings?

No, Chris, because it is leaking around the pistons. I think that means the pistons and all the other stuff have to be replaced.

a few technical setup questions on twin HS6's..

1)Should the vacuum pipe definitely be disconnected from the distributor?

2)What ignition timing should the engine be set to?

3)Any other useful setup info for these carbs/engine?

Cheers

Chris, by the way, my compression wasn't all that bad when I got the car a couple of years ago. I don't remember, but I have it written down somewhere at home, I think.

John, have a chat with Rick Craford, he's just finishing up an engine rebuild, can probably save you
some time an effort as all the particulars are still fresh.

I set my timing at around 8-10 BTDC on my 74 TR6. I have twin Strombergs btw. With such low compression I can never get it to ping and the engine pulls much stronger set there. I also plugged the vaccume advance/retard because the dizzy mech. advance works just fine on it's own. Also that vaccume retard sucks when your decelerating!
I get 20+mpg and the motor is pretty tired.

hope this helps,

On a similar set up to you I can quite easily exceed 30 UK MPG on a long run, reasonably gently driven, this obviously drops considerably if the car is hammered.
I run with the vac disconnected on an early vac advance UK spec distributor [in good condition].
I don't know what my timing is, never measured it, my usual method of setting the timing is to keep advancing it till the engine just pinks then retard it slightly.
If your consuption is bad I would tend to suspect the carbs rather than the timing as it needs to be well out to have a drastic effect on the consumption.

I drove to Salem & back, about 140 RT mainly freeway @ 70MPH plus some city and country driving and got about 28.5 to 30 MPG. Can't remember if I put 9.25 or 9.75 US galons in. Of course this was done on 215/65 tires which are a little shorter than stock so it's a little less.

On my 72 tr6 I get about 200 miles to the tank. This is city and hwy driving.

For your info, and to put my two bobs worth in, my TR6 PI gets 20 miles per gallon around town = 230+ miles to tank and country driving 24 mpg = 280+ to tank ...and its consistent. KGF
