Triumph TR6 - ...get a load of the new guy...

I've been stalking this fine web-site since summer when I fell victim to a darlin little '73 tr6. I should, however, stop Kerrying on and beating around the Bush and just say hello to everyone! (sorry 'bout that) Seriously, I am so fortunate to have you guys as a resource as I, myself, am a bit inexperienced with some of the more elusive aspects of these terrific cars. You guys really know your stuff and the vibe herein the board is enjoyable.

Hi Chris

First: Welcome! Good car choice. Come on in!

Second: OH No another wiseacre with a gift for the gab...:) <G>

I'm pretty much a new guy, too. I live in Nebraska. I have owned TRs since before your car was built, now that I think about it. I like the vibe here, too.
Tom

Welcome.

Just thought I'd pass on a little piece of advice and let you know that the '73 TR6 was the best year for the marque. No other year was as good as the '73.

Bob (This is a perfectly factual and unbiased testimonial from the owner of another '73. Some people may argue this contention, but, rest assured, they are WRONG!)

If you had said your 6 was Saphire Blue then I would have agreed with you...........on the colour that is:)

Chris E, Yes..Welcome. You where smart...jointed the forum before your first post..no one can give you a hard time now!..not even the goose! speeking of the goose, where is he?
One word of caution to you Chris. Do not keep telling us that you are still out driving your 6 around all winter long like that guy from Florida:)

Rick C
'71 TR6....a very fine year.

Rick Crawford

I also prefer my '71 but have to admit each has its charms. One fine way to spend a winter day is to belabor the relative differences with other devotees.

Rick - unfortunately, I must report that the current one is Royal Blue (with an worn out black interior, although the seat covers are very good, but the foam is powder), not Saphire Blue.

HOWEVER... my first TR6 (also a '73, purchased new in '73, burned to a crisp in '77 (but lets not dredge up bad memories) was a Mallard Green with the New Tan interior. The reason for my post about which vendors people prefered is due to the fact that I am almost done with the Porsche repairs, and I now will have (literally) unlimited cha-ching available to completely strip my '73, repaint it Mallard, and put a New Tan interior in it. The only difference between the two will be that the current one has wire wheels and no OD. And this blue '73 actually has LESS MILES on it than my original Mallard '73 (I've had it garaged for a LONG TIME, and can't wait to get back to it.)
Bob Blair

Bob,
I think (sorry, Rick)Mallard is the best color!! New Tan interior seals the deal. And in matters of taste there can be no dispute. Enuffa that!

When I was putting my 74 Mallard/New Tan back together, I confronted this group with a similar question. The best advice I got was to buy all components from the same place, so they would match. Well....there is a friend here in Boise that is a distributor for TRF, and like it says above, the quality is there. I ordered a carpet set and interior trim set, carpets got here, trim panels went to terminal back order. Literally the last set in the US was at Moss, so I bought 'em. Nobody else had them; not Rimmer, VB or anywhere else. 4 months later, the stuffing in the seats was 'powder' and I had to do them. TRF and Moss were back-ordered,4 to 6 weeks...so the only game was VB! Seat kits, with foams. The interior is the one thing that never fails to draw praise! It all matched so well, I have to admit I was as surprised as I was pleased! I think the tie that binds in this case is that all pieces had "Made in the UK" stickers on the back! Probably all came from the same place anyway???? .....TRF actually cuts their own carpet kit, so that blows that thought.....
So the moral is, get the car together and drive it!!
And now that I got that out....this wasn't the thread about vendors????
Mallard is the best.....

I tend to agree that the 73 was probably the zenith of TR6 production... Big port head, later frame but still with decent bumpers, and before all the dead weight.

If only all our problems where debating best colour. IMHO the TRs that stick out the most are the ones that have a "co-ordinating" interiour colour...ie. mallard/new tan....saphire blue/shadow blue. Black is such a boring interiour colour...now I ve done it:)
I am curious, can you buy new, a New Tan softtop cover?

Bottom line: we are the lucky ones to own and enjoy our TRs.

Rick C
No Big ***s on the front or back bumpers.
Rick Crawford

Rick - I was thinking a black top, to keep in line with my original '73. I've seen tan/brown tops, but I don't know if they match New Tan.

Bob.
Bob Blair

Hey Rick and all,

I have one of the boring cars with black top and interior, and big ***s (74). I kind of like the black, but was thinking about having a boob reduction. Is the augmentation the only difference between the 74 and earlier TR bumpers ?

Ignatius
Ignatius Rigor

Ignatuis,

The bumpers are different; I learned the hard way. I did a frame off on my 73 and bought a used front fender from a 76. The car came back from the paintshop looking beautiful and I started reassembly. When I got to the front bumper the mounting hole would not line up on one side. Had me going for a while until I figured out the problem. I was not happy!! So what to do? Repair the hole and repaint? I guess I should have, but I painted a round headed carriage bolt the body color and installed it in the hole. It actually doesn't look bad and no one has noticed it yet.

You will have to install chromed bolts to fill the holes in your bumpers. Also there is information on doing this in the archives.

By the way, once I make the change to New Tan, I will have black seat covers available - they are in very good shape - it's just the foam that's gone. I won't be taking the black off until I put the New Tan on, but I will make a post to let you know when they are available.
Bob Blair

Hey Chris from Oklahoma,

Welcome aboard....and I'll jump on the bandwagon and confirm that 73 was a very good year. Make sure you don't make it too pretty and after you get it just the way you like it, then drive it into the ground and restore it again, then give it to your kids....

You will recall I have had a ride in your voluptuous beauty. I knew I would ruffle someones feathers:)
Have seen a 6 with the boob reduction done. Yes the carage bolts do the trick.
Most definitely a difference in bumpers to earlier cars. Your bumper height was lowered to comply with good'ol CA. laws along with the you know whats. They are not interchangeable with eary bumpers.
Take the heads of the carage bolts to the buffer wheel to shine them up. Or, AUTOSOL will do the trick with just a terry towel...not the one from the kitchen though:)

Bob B. Do one seat at a time so you have a "pattern" to follow. There is definitely cutting to do and get a good upholstery glue...3M trim adhesive in a spray can.
Rick C
Rick Crawford

Hey Rick,
Haha it looks your ruffling feathers allright....I think the black interior and wooden dash go great with my white 75. In fact I remember the day I first saw her..it was the way the white body gleamed in the sun and the black interior was a perfect contrast....( I could be describing a woman ! ) and because it's B/W I think the bumperettes kinda blend in more so than other car colours..I originally planned on removing them but not now.
If I changed my interior I think it would be red with white piping
Cheers

I must butt in here and put my vote in for what everyone knows is the universal and classic combination, Screaming red exterior, jet black interior.

Chris

We all know how you like to scream.......down the road that is. Warp speed tends to warp a few engine parts Chris! but then you know that:)

Me thinks I was taken incorrectly. When I said softtop cover I was talking about the cover that goes over the softtop when the top is down.

Charlie and Chris, Since when did you 2 change to the "Amaricun" way of spelling the Queens language? It must have something to do with the interiour shade of colour of your cars.
Rick C
Rick Crawford

Honk!
Jim Deatsch

You must realize that there are many distinct accents and dialects spoken in Baja Caņada. As an example, here in Mayretta the "A" is silent, making it 'Mericun, while someone that is not a 'Mericun would be a Furriner. Having said all of that, it would appear from Rick C's earlier posting that "T**s is T**s" regardless of location in Noth 'Merica.
SteveP

Steve
Funny, when I travel to the US I always get told I have an accent. I disagree. My only fault is I say eh..EH!

Yup Steve, some things just are universal.

Ha the Goose is back!

Yep - It's the goose time of year.
