Triumph TR6 - hard top

Hello Everyone

I just bought a hard top but I have a few questions;

1) Can I install the hard top with soft top down or does it have to be removed completly ? If you have to remove the soft top ( hope not ) is it a big job, how ?

2) I have a roll bar, will the hard top fit over the roll bar ? I assume it would as the soft top works properly.

3) Any literature avail on " how to install "

I guess it would of made more sense to ask these questions BEFORE my purchase. I guess I got tr6 fever with March around the corner.

Thanks,
Ira

I am surprised you have not received an answer by now. I guess the north guys are hibernating and the south chaps out driving.
I do not own a hard top but I think I can answer your question.

1. Softop needs to be removed. The stiffening bar at the back of the softop must come off. A wrench from inside of car with the top up. Be careful not to scratch the paint. Fold the top down and remove bolts at B post. Lift top off. Is it a big job? Not really but I think you will not do this on the spur of the moment.

2. There is a good possibility it will. You know the way to find out:)

3. I have not seen any. But I know there are owners on this BBS with hard tops. I can not think it is that difficult.

Ira, Is the hard top complete? I understand parts are hard to come by.

I found the hardest part to be the two bolts behind the sunvisors. Do them first they just do not want to catch thread, I think they are a bit too short for a loose top. I finally got them in with my son pushing down on the top as hard as he could. The other four bolts really are very easy. You might want to take this opportunity to replace them with stainless steel. Do all repairs and up grades with the top off. I repainted mine and replaced all the rubber. I made my own headliner. Bolted down it makes the car tighter feeling.

You can remove the soft top completely and it will open up a good bit of interior room, but it is not necessary. You do have to remove the rear stiffening bar that Rick mentioned, but the balance is just keeping that out of the way while you lower the top in pretty much the normal manner. The top frame pivot at the B-post has a threaded hole for the hard top barrel mounts. They even make a little cover that you can cover the soft top with. Hey why else do you think they have those little snaps on the rear shelf of the hard top? It's for that cover.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I am very suprised that you need to remove the soft top completly. Are you all sure ?? I guess i should of checked that before i bought it.

It's all painted and all parts are replaced. Just waiting for the headliner. Top will be in excellent condition.

I am not going to remove the soft top as it's a pain in the as-. If anyone is interested to buy this refurbished hard top let me know. Located in Toronto

Thanks again

Ira,

Some folks keep the top in the car and only remove the rear bracket. It's earier that way.

Can I just fold the top down and put the hard top on with out taking anything off ?

Thanks

No, you must unbolt the rear bar from the bodywork behind the cabin. Unlatch and unsnap the top/hood as if you were lowering it, then raise the header to the high point in its travel arc. You will then have plety of slack in the top/hood to remove the two 1/4" bolts that hold the rear bar down below the center rear window. Once it is loose, you lower the top/hood almost as normal. The primary difference is that you let that rear bar drape into the cabin. It will bo a good idea to place a towel ot blanket or something to provide a little padding across the rear body work so it is not scratched by the bar.

After that it is on with the hardtop. There are two styles of the hardtop side mounts. One style is for when the top/hood has been removed completely and one for when it has been lowered as described above. Start the bolts at the windscreen, the rear where the raised bosses are located and the two side locations. For the side locations, bolt the mounts to the threaded holes in the pivot plate for the top/hood frame, then install hardtop mounting bolts through the fittings on the hardtop into the side mounts bolted to the frame. Now that all of the fateners are started, you can tighten them. Just remember they are rather small, so no need for gorilla torque.
