Triumph TR6 - Harmonic Balancer

During the recent engine overhaul I noticed that the harmonic balancer/crank pulley-damper was chipped in several places on the front groove "wall", and that the rubber was very hard and cracked. However, neither Moss, TRF, or VB had a replacement. I mounted the balancer on a make-shift spindle and ground down the front wall evenly to eliminate the chips and reinstalled it.

My questions - does anyone know a source of harmonic balancers for 1/2" belts? Do I even need a new one? Your comments, please.

Sorry, but your out of luck as far as a new one is concerned. No replacements can be bought as new. Your best bet is to contact salvage yards for LBC's.

A guy at work knows of a company that rebuilds crankshaft damper/pulleys. He had them rebuild the one for his TR250. I'll see if he is in tomorrow and can get the information from him, I'll post back to the board with it.

Hi Brent

This outfit has rebuilt units in Tucson. I have never dealt with them so check them out.

Hey - I did some searching and found this guy, too. He is a real hands on sort, with lots of experience. I may send it off to him.

is the place my friend used. Cost was $89 plus shipping at the time his was done. I did a quick dogpile.com search and saw them referenced on many types of cars, but did not get a URL for them directly.

This is more a question than a comment on harmonic dampners on a TR6 - My understanding is the stock pully on a TR6 is not a harmonic dampner. Is this correct?

From everything I've seen the stock crank pulley is 2-piece with a rubber "coupling". Whether it's called a harmonic balancer or a crankshaft damper depends on the source - I don't know what's correct. I guess harmonic damper gets it all ;>). I just pulled mine, BTW, to send off. A bit more of a job than I reckoned, #*&!$*!.

Ok - just got the crank pulley/harmonic balancer back from this guy

He does a good job, and turnaround is fast, just like he promises! The cost with shipping & insurance is around $100. What got me was that he sent back the rubber pieces (2 rings) from the original. The old rubber was quite degraded and easily torn. If you have a 30 year old balancer, you should consider this.

Yes after thirty years mine does look a bit tired- more like a harmonic unbalancer. But the crank has done nearly 1/4 million miles and is still not in need of a regrind. I reckon at 2500rpm typical on-road revs there's cannot much in the way of harmonics needing balancing. So the spare balancers can stay in the back of the shed a while longer.

I've just finished a total engine rebuild and see that my damper pulley is getting a bit crusty. It should last for a while yet, but I was wondering if anybody has tried using a 3/8" pulley with a 3/8" belt and seeing if the belt would run on the 1/2'' alternator & water pump pulleys?

Hi Doug

I hope thats correct not sure from your ID.

The belts drive on the sides more than bottom. Your water pump and alternator would slip and probably toss the belt in short order. In most cases there hard to replace with engine in due to crossmember.

Do you have an older TR unit with 3/8 thats in better shape?

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll just keep on the look out for a good used 1/2" pulley.

I spoke to the mechanic who takes care of the TR250K which was built by Peter Brock and Kastner and asked him what he was doing for a crank pulley. He told me the car was having trouble revving and he had a pulley for a 350 Chev machined to fit it. He said this allowed the car to get over the threshold of revs that TR motors have. I don't remember what he said it was revving out to, but it sure was a sweet sounding engine.

Rewing ????

Hi Charly

350 damper has a lot more mass and designed for larger crank and balance. Not sure of fit problems but have a few around. Will have to take a look at that when snow stops. Kind of interesting when everyone is unloading weight on flywheel.

Things I've read say that adding weight to the TR6 crank actually made it perform better.

Thats revving not rewing
