Triumph TR6 - Harry Webster

For your information. Harry Webster has died. Without Harry Webster, none of us would be driving triumphs!.
Aidan Dearsley

Aidan, you can't just leave us hanging like that. Tell us more about this individual who, apparently, we should know more about.

I met Harry Webster when I attended the unveiling of the Standard-Triumph Monument in 2000.

Don Elliott, Original Owner, 1958 TR3A
PS - My TR turned 49 yesterday. It was born in the Canley factory near Coventry between 2:30 and 4 PM on Friday Feb 14th (St. Valentine's Day).
Don Elliott

This is sad news.
For a mustang owner it would be like saying Carol Shelby passed away.
Thank you for letting us know Aidan.

Don, happy birthday to your other wife.
I hope you all made note of the last sentence in the link Don points to.

As the owner of a Michelotti-designed TR4A I have to thank Harry Webster for his, what was then , bold move in hiring the Italian designer. Thank you Harry for a classic "look" (it's OK guys, 6's look good too!)
The obituary says that "Harry would often drive from Coventry to Turin and back in a weekend...."
This sounds like Harry was not only a sharp businessman
but one h*** of a driver, when you condsider no Chunnel and, I assume, no autoroutes. I wonder if he was driving a TR?

Dennis:

It's great to have other Triumph drivers post on the TR6 site; we know the TR6's look good and so do the TR4's. I thank Harry too as I also had a TR4A, for 12 years of great fun with the wind in the hair I used to have....but try a TR6 and you will never look back. I drove my old TR4A this summer and I would gracefully decline having it back. Michelotti was pretty cool in his day but Karmann absolutely hit the bullseye with the redesign that became the TR6 - the best looking affordable British sports car ever built. (IMHO) I went seriously looking for a TR4A in 2002 and decided prices for a decent one were too high and picked a TR6 in 2004, which is the best move I ever made. Anyway, back to the engine rebuild and hopefully pics will be forthcoming. Installation of the new engine is scheduled for the May 24th weekend. Hope the ZZDP additives hold up!!

Cheers,
Bob

Hi Bob:
Just to clarify, I'm not quite at the "wind in my (remaining) hair" yet, since my 4A is undergoing a complete body-off-frame re-build so it will be a while yet.Actually I have owned and enjoyed both a 4 and a 6 in the past. I bought a new TR6 in '72 while I was doing an engine re-build and bodywork/new paint on my '65 TR4.
I was so pleased with the 4 when it was done that I kept it and sold the 6. I can tell you it was a tough descision to make but since I could insure the 4 for significantly less than the 6,and since I was "between jobs", that was basically that.
When I decided last year to re-enter the world of LBC's,whether it would be a 4,250 or a 6 I didn't even seriously consider anything other than a TR.
(Actually I did look at a 1750 Alfa Spyder, but the thought of dealing with that nasty Spica fuel injection killed that idea)

A TR is a TR is a TR...
Better than owning an mg.
To bad you had to sell the 6. You could still be a braggart about being an OO ( Original Owner).

Ooh Rick, ya cut me to the quick!
I love my 6, but I love my B's too...

I figured I might raise a few hairs:)
Very nice collection especially the AH.
In my local BCC, the MGs way out number the 6s. Some good bantering back and forth.

Rick,
LOL.

Thanks. Well, I should have said they are all projects in one form or another (even the daily driver). Some of them are bigger projects than others - the 100-6 most of all! It's a Midwest car from new and never been restored.....
