Triumph TR6 - Heater Hoses

Reassembly of the car is now in progress! One of my jobs is to fit new water hoses, and I am half tempted to leave the heater hoses be since they don't look too badly cracked... I know I should - I am just worried that I will find another dozen jobs while I am replacing those hoses. I just finished putting new brass bushings onto my throttle shaft (previously there were no bushings of any kind!) and I had a look while I was under there - there is no obvious way to get the clamps off the bulkhead end. The manual says remove the glovebox - is that the only way? I wondered whether I could remove the heater ends and then pull the hoses through to the engine compartment with the double pipe connector. Any tips?

Cheers

All I gota say is if they are OE then replace them. Yes the 2 little guys inside the car are difficult to do. The bulkhead "conector" piece, look out for it being rusted. Do not know about the glove box thing as I was doing the restore thing and there was a little more than the glove box missing. I do not think the glove box needs to be removed though.

Hi Alistair,
I agree with Rick that you may find the double pipe connector rusted. The problem with those two hoses is that they are twisted around each other and they are secured (at least mine where) by two small adjustable clamps. I don't think you will need to remove the glove box if you can lay on the floor and get to the clamps with a long, thin screw driver or socket. Hopefully the head of the adjustment screw will be facing you.

Aren't they suppose to be straight??

Don, maybe that be why he always so cold??:)

Doug- HUH??

The 2 little heater hose pips inside the passenger foot area are definitely not straight. I would ONLY replace them with pre bent hoses. There is absolutely no way you will install "non-preformed" hose there.

Tom, I remember those days. Mine was rusted on the engine side but usable.

Confession time: I do recall (this is a first:) having to replace the 2 hoses after the restoration. I thought I could get away with the OE hoses but they leaked. I did not have to remove anything other than having to have back surgery after replacing them.

Don, figured if they were bent (too much), he might have little or no circulation through the heater core. Thus no heat...some cold!!

Man - I must have been tired!

Thanks for the advice, guys (and thanks for whatever that was, Doug and Don!!)

I got the hoses changed last night - I decided to wait for the new connector to arrive - the old one wasn't too bad when I looked at it, but I really don't want to do that job again for a long time!! I removed an air hose from the heater and the dash brace piece so that I could move that air hose out of the way, and I had to cut the hose clamps with a dremel - I spent a while staring up at them and wondering how they were fastened in the first place - my guess is with no dash in place.

I don't think that the old hoses were too badly stressed lately - I just replaced the apparently seized heater valve and that's when I found out that the heater control wire had broken behind the dash. Another order for TRF!

Now, about that back surgery...

Alistair,

Do not throw out the old heater cables until you have checked things out with the new ones. I bought a set of the heater cables from them and the knobs came off in my hand when given a pull. Turns out that the hex for the knob on the new cable assemblies was 6 mm and not 1/4" like the originals. Just enough smaller (~.014") that the knobs would not stay on. I wound up pulling both the old cable assemblies and the new cable assemblies apart and with a little mixing and matching of parts between the two sets came up with cables that worked.

I notified Roadster of the problem, but never got anything out of them regarding the situation.
