Triumph TR6 - help wiring
so, Ive taken on the daunting task of re-wiring the tr6. Ive started in the trunk, and I have everything wired up and ready to go into the cock pit. Now my question is, what wires would hook up to the top the fuel tank? I cant seem to find where it is on the wiring diagram. Thanks guys |

Which wiring diagram are you using and what year car? |

Looks like a green and brown wire plus a black earth to the sender. Check www.advanceautowire.com for excellent stock wiring diagrams. Edit to say that Don is spot on - the colour changes by year... Green and xxx - check the website above. Cheers Alistair |

Thnaks guys. its a 74. the diagram is a huge help, however I still dont see what wires that would be. The stock were red and black. what system would be at the top of the tank? My guess is its the fuel level reader, but Im having a tough time tracing the wires as I dont see it |

Actually the wire colour stayed pretty consistant...Green/black (GB). '72 was the only year of change where it was Green/brown (GN). (notice that Black is a B and Brown is N)...obviously you can not have 2 Bs. Green is the main colour of the wire the black is the "tracer" colour. There is only one wire going to the sender on the top of the tank. It is obviously the GB wire. The Black ground comes off of the sender and goes to a screw ground. I do beleive one of the screws that holds the tank in place. The GB wire travels back up the drivers side then through the MOLEX connector behind the kick panel then straight to the fuel gauge. SBF the stock wire was not RB. Do not let that little short GB wire between the fuel gauge and the (rheostat) sender fool you. There is a small error in the electrical schematics for all years. There should be a O with an X in it which represents the MOLEX connector behind the driver kick panel. You will notice that all wiring that travels to the back of the car HAS to go through this connector. Look at the reverse lights just below the gauge and sender...there is an O with an X in it. Actually Kemo-Sabe, there is a ground tab on the body for that sender I believe. R/B is your RH seat belt switch. Depending on who is in that seat and what they had for lunch, not a lot of gas there!! |

My fuel sender connections branch off from the main wiring harness where it passes the gas tank (on the drivers side) and goes up and along the underside of the rear deck above the tank. There are 3 leads- 2 for the sender (green/black and black), 1 for the trunk light(purple) which then drop down where the tank sender is on the tank and where the trunk light is. My TR6 is a 69 and has no seat belt buzzer circuit (or for that matter much else extra when it comes to electrical systems) Don't know if this helps. |

My humble appologies. I do believe Mike is correct. At least I got the wire colour correct. Rick |

great info guys thanks! now one more thing. is there something I can look at that breaks down all the electrical symbols shown in the diagram and what they mean? |
SBF Fitzgerald |
There are symbols? Isn't everything labeled?? |
DON KELLY |
ha I just looked at the diagrams for a little while and understood them. Sorry for the incompetence. Funny, I can wire a house but whens it comes to a car, its a little more tricky |
SBF Fitzgerald |
I use to think that too until I completely redid mine. All makes sense after awhile |
DON KELLY |
SBF One big difference in wiring a house and a car is that you have considerably less chance of doing bodily harm when wiring a car. I find a car MUCH easier. Only one way of wiring a switch and a light not 30!! Rick |
