Triumph TR6 - Help with the frame

I have a 1974 TR6<> The frame on it is still ok, however it does have rust and it is flaking through out the frame inside and out. what could I do to slow down the rust or clean it. I will be doing the job my sel and I do not want to spend lots of $$$. I will be working out of my 1 car garage. I thougt of using a drill with a wire brush and clean it the best I can. I would then use the used oil from my car or an under body spray to pait it. Is the crazy or am I not the only one thinging about this???

Are you planning a daily driver or just a fair weather machine?
Chris Wiebe

I would not use used motor oil.

The TR will coat the bottom with used oil all on its own! ;)

Jeff reply and I will give you some ideas if your still watching?

Won't waste my time otherwise.

On my frame and underside of car I used a wire brush to loosen all surface rust and dirt and just painted with rust-oleum paint. Not a superduper under coating but I never drive in the rain (unless I get caught off-guard). I did it 2 years ago and it still looks like I did it yesterday. If you need more extensive protection, if the rust is worse, or on the inside of the frame, someone else on the board probably knows more than me!

I am still watching... I do have some rust inside the frame but they look like flakes.

Hi Jeff

First check the trailing arm cross mounts for holes? Use an ice pick or awl back edge and bottom. Dig around to evaluate.

Unless you want to paint which won't slow rust already started. Por 15 or some other works. Quite expensive and hard to get at all areas.

Take it to a basic under car oiling place. Check around and find out who others like. You don't need fancy with big prices about 50 bucks is average. Get them to gun down the back frame ends. And in the center set of unused holes on the trailing arm mounts. Then point out any visable hole and give a shot. There price covers plug oiling in car structure that you can't use so ask for frame extras..:)

If your frame is not bad. That will probably be the best you can do without removing from car. Oil blast will get to the top of frame as well.

Jeff:

I you were to become a member there's lots of stuff in the archives on this. I personally filled my frame with "Great Stuff" expanding foam, and it worked great. Others have differing opinions on the wisdom of this, but that's OK. Diversity of opinion is what makes this forum what it is. If you decide to join, refer to "Underbody Cleaning" in the TR6 archives for some good ideas.

did fill out the form to become a memeber? I guess I should stop drinking while on the computer... Any how, Bill could you or any one else give me a few names of places that do that type of under work in the GTA???
Jeff

Hi Jeff

Sometimes getting hooked up with this sight is a bit of a pain.

Sorry in Guelph so I don't know TO.

Look under Rust Proofing in the yellow pages. Ask a few questions before you take the car? Then come back here and let everyone know whats offered. There may be a gem amongst a bunch of rocks someone can spot?

For just straight oiling if you don't plan to paint any reliable not using used oil place should be good.

Remember if you want to paint anything don't oil it before. Lots of cleaning if you do. Paint then oil!

Trying to save money!
Do you have a compressor?
About 5 years ago I got a little sandblster from Sears for around $25.00 and a big piece of plastic sheet from Home Depot for about about $8.00, plus a bag of sand $5.00. I took the plastic and laid it out in my driveway. placed the frame on it and sand blasted my frame. After I was done I cleaned the channels out with a vacum. Then the most costly part I POR-15 the the frame and then covered it with Hammerite paint. I think it took about 2 quarts of POR-15 and a little more of the Hammerite. The frame turned out really nice.

Now if you frame is not off the car, then I would clean it with a wire brush or something, then put a rust removal product on, like "Navel Jelly" or this product http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=1122&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=379&iSubCat=380&iProductID=1122
Then cover it with some POR-15 or Eastwood's rust paint.
