Triumph TR6 - High Idle

Hi Guys,
Here's the scoop...
Vac steady at 18
RPM steady at approx 10...(Lowest I can set)
Engine smooth at idle
Timing at 8 BTDC
Mixture about mid-range...changing it makes no difference..
Drives great..BUT...I can't bring my idle down..it sits about 10 to 11 hundred with the idle screws backed right off !
I'm sure it's carb related but I've pulled them apart and all seems well..It was fine up until a month ago and I didn't touch anything..honest !
The throttle discs are snug against the carb body at idle, I thought maybe one was wider than the other but they both seem to be the same.
Any experience with this one out there ???
Cheers

Hey Charlie, I have one just like her in Jersey Milk Chocolate Brown, grab another pint, lay down and keep on admiring her! Its those bypass valves which have witch like tendecies to just change all by themselves... I gave up on mine, idle is either 1100 or Zero Go Figure!!!

Hahahaha thanks Brian..sadly it's not the bypass valves...It's the same when they are are hooked up or "bypassed" but thanks anyway,,,,see you soon.

Excessive clearance at the throttle shafts?
Tom

I thought of that Tom, figured it's an air leak somewhere...sprayed everything while it was running and nothing changed.

Undo and hold your thumb over the hose from the carbs to the charcoal cannister - any change? Do the same with the brake booster.

Also, what did you mean that the bypass valves were "by-passed"? Almost all the bp valve gaskets have a notch cut out of a section so there is always leakage. Years ago I found a set without the cut-out, and that brought the idle down. Now I have a gasket "blank" in there so the valves are completely inoperative. Also disabled the temp compensators.

Hi Brent,
I made a solid gasket for the bypass valves and found that when I installed them I have very poor suction on one carb only (the valves are linked via that rubber hose) if I removed the gasket both carbs were equal again. So I removed the springs ( and lost one...impossible to find anywhere in stores) so the valves are now floating in there..but still no change to the idle. My next thing is to remove the temp comp and see what happens...

Okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk I replaced my carbs with spares from my friend Malcolm and the car idles at 850 ! drives great ...I think I'll keep them ! So That tells me that at least one ( maybe both ) of my carbs is seriously sucking air so now it's the process of elimination to find the cause..I did notice that one throttle disc gets stuck in the chamber indicating it's too small ?
Of course this proces may take several weeks while I use his carbs while the weather is nice...mmmmm

Hey Rick- When did you say it would be back on the road? Think about all the time you'll have to work on it this winter
