Triumph TR6 - Hood Liner

In another thread I mentioned that I bought a hood liner for my 76 from LBC Co. I installed it today and offer the following:

1. LBC Co. suggests the use of 3M Spray Adhesive #80, aka 3M (Yellow) Rubber & Vinyl Adhesive #80, to attach the liner to the engine hood. It is made to tolerate high temperatures (engine compartments). When one tries to buy this product many store clerks will offer 3M #77 or 3M #90 spray adhesives if #80 is not in stock. These will not do the job. Pursue the 80. Or...

For those of you in Canada, where I was unable to buy the #80 unless I bought the 4 can minimum at $26/can (I only required 1/2 can), I found a 3M equivalent under the name "3M Super Trim Adhesive". It boasts "Exceptional Bond Strength" and a Nascar Performance endorsement. It is made for hood liners and other high temp applications. I suspect that since 3M sells through an "Automotive" Division and an "Industrial" Division the 80 and what I bought are likely the same but labelled differently to improve their distribution and prevent apparent marketplace overlap.

2. The liner is pre-cut to fit correctly but depending on how you handle it when gingerly placing the stuff within the 26 minute tack window it can be stretched a bit (or not) and thus be a bit smaller or larger than the flat portion of the hood (bonnet). So, when you spray the adhesive on the liner, apply the adhesive to the outside edges as directed but when you spray the adhesive on the hood keep the spray inside your masked off area by a 1/4" to 1/2" so that if the liner is slightly smaller than the flat hood space, the oversprayed glue (yellow) will not show. It's a detail but I wish I had done a better job of that step. There is a cleaner called 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner which I will buy to tidy things up.

3. Wear a NIOSH approved respirator. The vapours are harmful! Wear gloves too... this stuff comes with several cautions.

Good luck.

Ken

No, I don't know why my emissions label is on that upper right part of the engine hood instead of the left front wheel well. There are holes in the wheelwell as those a plate should go there.

Buy "Ram Tack" usually in stock...1 can purchase allowed..has held up on my 5.3 Liter V-12 for 2 years now and there is no underhood HOTTER on the planet then that of an XJS V-12 in the Florida summer. Goo Gone will remove just about ANY excess adhesive...even golf club grip adhesive, good stuff....Your under bonnet looks G-O-O-D!

Thx JT... I think I have GooGone around here somewhere. Should have thought of that. I'll give it a go. Where is RAM TACK usually sold? Automotive stores like PepBoys, AutoZone, etc?
Ken Shaddock

It's used in the construction industry. You can buy it online good stuff.

Despite receiving good advice from JT... I had not only committed myself to the 3M adhesive which I used successfully but to the 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (and Wax Remover) p/n 08984.

I just finished using the latter and it worked well. So, with the residue from my glue job cleaned up the hood cover looks pretty good.

My ways not the only way it's just one of them out there. I've got long term success with the RAMTACK for under hood use so I thought I'd share. Glad you had success and it looks really GOOD.
