Triumph TR6 - how to tell if you have OD

ok so as some of you may know, Im still re-wiring the TR6, yep;still. So I took of the tunnel cover to connect the reverse switch wire. On the driver side of the tranny, there is a black solenoid with 2 prongs on it. The one has a ground and the other has nothing connected to it. Whats thhat solenoid for? thanks
SBF Fitzgerald

The only solenoid I know on the drivers side of the tranny is the solenoid to engage the Overdrive. It should be connected to a relay in the engine compartment.

I'm pretty sure the "J" type uses the large black solenoid on the O/D unit and does not hook to a relay in the engine compartment...the "A" type uses the relay in the engine compartment. Black solenoid for O/D would be on lower right side rear of tranny withe the prongs faceing rearward. The transmission would have a distinct "added" section about 6" wide the went from rear of trans to tail housing.

awesome, looks like I have an OD tranny theen. Now I just need to connect it and put the correct badging on. Soething tells me this isnt the original tranny
SBF Fitzgerald

Look at your plate in the door jamb (driver side) Check the Comm # if the last thing stamped on that line is an "O" just under the word "above" then your car was originally an O/D car. Mine is and I have the tranny in the storage shed....just someone removed the rear badge. Do you have the stalk for it on the left side of the steering column?
JT White

well my car was painted some time in the past, so I dont have a door plate. What is a stalk?
SBF Fitzgerald

In addition to your turn signal stalk you would have another one on the same side just FWD of the turn signal....ie, right side high/low beam...left side seperate turn and O/D stalks (levers) You should have the commision # on the windshield tag on the left pillar, that should end in "O" if it indeed an O/D car from the factory.

Thanks JT for the help. I dont have the stalk. The tranny in my tr6 looks just like the one in the pic. The floor is also cut up a bit which leads me to beleive the tranny had been pulled before. The person who did it before was just lazy I guess and cut parts out of the floor to make the opening bigger on the sides

What year is your car?
JT White

its va 74' tr6
SBF Fitzgerald

"J" type
