Triumph TR6 - import J type OD
I have found a supplier in the UK that has J type over drive units (sans transmission) refurbished for $340 each. In order to lower the shipping costs, I'm wondering if there are any Toronto, South Western Ontario TR drives interest in this opportunity? I've asked whether or not the supplier has the main shafts available as well. I think this is a better option than the current 1300 to 1600 asking price for rebuilt J type ODs. Bryn |

finding a j-type is not a problem, if fact they are fairly common as Volvo 140 and 240 series used them. The problem is that the mounting holes are slightly different and the adaptor housing is the key part that is impossible to find nor is it available as a re-manufactured part. |

Is it possible to retro fit? |

Quite simple: Without an adapter housing...NO The only way around one is to borrow the housing from someone and get one casted at a foundry. |

or have an adapter scanned and modeled, then machined. It has gotton to the point with the advent of the modern machinery and imaging equipment that castings and forgings have lost much, and in many cases all, of their cost advantage over machined parts. In my line of work, we have pretty much moved away from castings and forgings except when part configuration cannot be supported by a typical wrought product form. Our common run of parts just doesn't justify the mold or die development costs. Besides, when you make something out of plate, the mechanical properties are typically well characterized in all three primary directions which is a boon for analysis purposes. The modeling would be a fixed fee based upon machine time. Once the model is made, it can be transferred to CNC equipment and hogged out. Even with your basic bread and butter commodity aluminum plate, 6061-T651, you will have better mechanical properties than with the cheesy aluminum casting used for the original adapter. The unit price per part would then be a function of how many are being made. The more you get, the lower they cost per unit. As an example, when we had the rear disc brake brackets made, the cost of a single pair was about the same as the equivalent cost of five if we had a dozen made. |

Sounds like a good business venture for you Bryn, order the J-types from your source, get several adaptors made and sell them as a complete unit. There certainly will be a demand as every TR6 driver would want one and given the going rate of over $1000us for a used one you might be able to undercut this price and still make a profit |

Hi All This might not help you guys across the pond much but the easiest & cheapest source of J type ODs in this country are Dolomite Sprints & the big Triumph saloons. The complete gearbox & OD appear quite regularly on ebay and don't go for much, It might be worth buying and just getting the parts you want shipped. They have the same mainshaft & adapter as the TR6 but the output drive flange needs redrilled or changed Ron |

Another option is to look at the thread about 15 items down this page - 5 speed Toyota Conversions. Don Elliott, 1958 TR3A |

The casting idea is good! I used to work at Alcan International and know quite a few casting experts. This is a possibility. I'll keep yopu posted. |

Ron, That is exactly what I did for my '76. Purchased an entire unit from a saloon including adaptor and mainshaft from a guy in New Zealand. Paid $200 plus $90 shipping and it works great. Mike |

So, in theory, the bell-housing from a Dolomite Sprint, Triumph Stag, 2000 MK1, Vitesse 1600 will fit on the TR6 engine? Sounds too good to be true but I will explore this option. |
Bryn |
Or rather the J type OD will fit onto the TR's gearbox... The only the output flag needs re-jigging. |

Bryn, I used the bell housing out of my '76 and used the OD from the 2000. Sent the output flange to my local machine shop and redrilled the correct holes..cost $5. MIke |

Would the OD from a GT6 work (ie. will the adapter palte fit onto the TR6 gearbox?) |
Bryn |
Byrn, I am not sure, maybe someone else can have a more definite answer. From what I have been told the answer is no. Mike |
