Triumph TR6 - irratic idle

I have irratic idle. It idles from 500-1000 then back. The timing seems to be off, could that be the problem, or is it carb problem. I am new to tr6's and would really appreciate the help.

I have already learned a ton by reading previous posts.

thanks,

Did you check for vac. leaks?

All the vac lines look good. The idle happened after I did the valves. Thanks again
Adam Wilhite

Maybe they are to tightI beleive a previous thread talked about over tightening the valves(ie:adjust gap from screw top, crank down the bolt, over tight) Maybe Rick C. has info on this I seem to remember him somewhere on this issue. Also, Adam, what type of ignition stock or modified (electronic).

It's stock, with points.

What did you do to the valves?Adam A vac leak does not only happen at the lines ,anywhere there is a connection, manifold to head, carb to man,etc... If it was after a adjustment I would do them again.

Here's an interesting thing. When I disconnected the vac on the distributor, it idled fine????? I will check the valves agin tommorow. Only a few needed minor adjustment....
Adam Wilhite

I did the vavles by the book, is their a recommended gap??, or technique.

thanks,

I had the exact same problem, we found that my mixture adjustment on one carb was way off-- the thread on the needle adjustment had been turned out to far causing it to float...With your car idling and when it speeds up carefully watch the air valves and you might see one moving up and not the other. The one moving up is causing the problem, if you gently push against it with your finger and hold it in place your idle should stay put.

I was told by a long time owner of a TR3A that lives near me that my valves sounded to tight. I guess if they are to tight...no gap..then they might stay open slightly. After using the "clikadjust" they are louder...now she sounds like a farm tractor of years gone by. Adam there is no secret to the adjustment. Go to a past thread this month called Gunsen Tools. You will see the order to adjust and a little trick that helped me. .010" gap cold.
Charlie what u have said ( and u have said this before) is starting to catch my attention I have a slight miss and a "burbling" on deceleration. I am steady at about 900RPM idle. I have been playing with the needle adjustment screw using the special tool and I have now set my front carb fully CW...it will not turn any more CW. The plugs (front 3 and back 3) look OK after a long run. My back carb has another turn and a half to go CW before it stops. Will try your suggestion. I know Rick O asked me this and also suggested I do a leak test at the throttle shafts. MAN our little babies are fun!!
