Triumph TR6 - It's a boy! err.. a girl! Cigars anyone?

Well it's blue so I said "It's a boy!" but don't us guys think of cars in feminine terms... as in, "she's a beauty".

Rick C said I had to make the World Wide announcement here on our beloved BBS. I have finally gotten off my duff and bought a car. You fellow BBS'ers have been a great help with your patient postings re all my Q's. I thank you sincerely for getting me up the learning curve a little.

Congratulations Ken,

You won't regret it.

SHE is a beauty, or will be soon.

Ken,
Again, congratulations.
SHE is a beaut!

Now you have all winter to come up with a vanity plate.

Ken,

That's a "chick's" color. Just kidding. She is awsome. And she'll put out too.

I'm a little confuse though (happens easy these day's). I didn't think you actually owned this. I thought you were looking. You mentioned in one of your posts that you were going to look at something closer to home. I probably don't remember the crucial post that explained all this.

Well you aren't losing your memory Henry! You are right in that I was looking, not buying, and indeed this weekend (Oct 15) I was going to look at a 73 within 150 miles of where I live. BUT, the 76 on the west coast beckoned in the eleventh hour with the seller providing several good answers to questions I had asked... toss in a weak moment and badda bing, I was sold.

Let the record to show that this was an illogical decision. The 73 was a good body off resto, I knew the seller, I could go see it, caress it, test drive it, etc. and, it was less money. The other car was 3000 miles from here and I bought it via the Internet from a guy I've never met. How do you like it so far! You see, I qualify as a car nut with no good excuse for my impulsive and odd behaviour. :>}~ Ken

Welcome to the Club Ken. She looks real purdy.

I have some extra parts. Should you be in need of anything just let me know.

It's so shiny!

By chance, are there possibly any closer pictures avialable of how the rotisserie adaptors fit to the tub?
SteveP

I have no other pictures Steve but will ask for you and post if available. Ken
Ken Shaddock

I should have added that clicking on a picture enlarges the image. The view of the rotisserie from the rear when enlarged shows a bolt-up through the bumper holes.

I have tried Charlie but my attempts seem to end up in a re-registration loop so obviously I'm not doing something correctly. I have contacted the BBS webmaster for direction. Thx. Ken.

Ken,

It looks to me like you made a great choice. You bought it while the resto was in progress right? At the stage you showed us it's easy to see that the job is being done right.

Ken,
Nice one.
I am looking forward to hearing of the great times to come.

Cheers , Pete.

Ken
The body on the car is so clean it looks like it came from Californi. Ask him where it came from please...I am curious. You can see the driver floor pan was replaced and a few other spots.

SteveP, not sure if you are aware of this but hover over the pic with your mouse down in the lower R corner and there is a button to enlarge the pic ( after you have double clicked it).

Good point Henry!

Ken,

Looks like a future show winner to me! Hate you didn't look at the '73...I'm a little biased that way! You won't believe how time will drag as you wait on her to be finished...but the cross country drive should more than make up for the wait! Keep posting pictures as she progresses.

I had done that , but was wanting to confirm that the rear was only held at the rear bumper holes and the the door openings were done by using the windscreen and top attach points in the main tub. Off hand it seems that one would want to use something in addition to those bumper holes at the rear, but if that is all it takes, it would definitely make the mounting easier. Perhaps some doubler plates were used to reinforce those points?
SteveP

Rick,

Looks like a little rocker (sill) repair too. But this dude knows what he's doing.

He has another car in progress. Look at the third pic from the bottom. There's a car above the TR tub.
I can't figure out what it is. Anyway you can see this guy's a pro.

Ken... If that's the one you were worried about a color change. Don't worry!!

Henry
HP Henry Patterson

Steve P,
I had the same thought looking at the rear mounting points. Even though this is a double wall area and can support the bumper (with the help of the side mounts attached to the frame), I would have personally used the mounts located on the shelf above the diff since there is less chance of twisting the body shell.
I have also heard of people cutting out semi circles in plywood and attaching them to the side of the body in order to "roll" the body over to gain access to the bottom.

Sunday night (15th)... been away all day and just got home and caught up on all these great postings. Thanks guys. I especially like reading stuff that says the guy doing the resto knows his stuff from your view. I'm sure counting on it.

I think what I'm gonna do once I drive across Canada is blow right through Ontario to the east coast, swing down to Conneticut and then hit South Carolina and Georgia. Jump on I-75 and head back north to see Henry in Michigan before the Goose tour of Ontario. I'll take some real beer south with me for Tom, Steve, Henry and Mike... that should be fun, and pick up some single malt Scotch at the duty free for the boys in Ontario when coming back home. We'll all have a shot or two as I make the rounds, so to speak. Now, Peter... the side trip to Australia, that's a challenge but doable. Hmmm, I'll talk to the wife.

I'll try to get some details on the rotisserie.

Ken
Ken Shaddock

Hey guys... I emailed Neil and received this from him on his rotisserie mount for the car:

"It was secured on the back using the bumper mount locations. The outer body steel is reinforced by an inner panel giving enough strengh to run a nut and bolt through. At the front, the body forward of the inner fenders is not very strong (without the chassis) so I used long arms to grab the body between the firewall and the inner fenders at a body mount location. I used a little reinforcing tube forward of the body mount (seen in pic) and a tube from A post to B post (or front door post to rear door post) on left and right sides to give the body some rigidity. What makes this possible is that the body is very light."

On my site with pic of the car I have added two more shots of the rotisserie. Ken.

Ken, one thing you should know (and are finding out the hard way) is that this group is a bunch of enablers. There is some debate over whether the Little British Car affliction is an addiction or a disease, but there is no doubt that you have it. The next question is: Can you stop at just one?

Your TR is going to be a beaut. I look forward to seeing it when you pass through sunny Saskatchewan next spring!

Thx Tony... in fact I was think about treatment or counseling but then again, why spoil the fun.

Hey Rick & Charlie, I'm a member! Finally linked myself to the correct screen, duh. How am I ever going to tune those Zeniths if I'm struggling with links & gui's. ;)

Charlie: Thanks again for the show & tell at your place on the seat bracket.

K. T. Shaddock

Congratualations Ken and Nadine! (...always include the wife so that they feel a resposability toward your LBC affliction).

I don't suppose you will be on the Island for next spring? There is a gentleman in Campbell River with a twin to your car... I will send a pic or two... I think Garry's is an inferior 1973 model, however. What is the com # on your machine? There are two other cars around here within 100 numbers of my machine, CF57639UO.

With regards to the member/non-member issue, I have tried to rid myself of the non-member title for a few years now without success... I have full access to all aspects of the sight, have a password, a profile etc... but alas I am not "IN" . I think it may have something to do with my computer or internet provider's virus .

Cheers, Rob

Hi Robb. No mine must have come later. I think the number is up in the 54000+ range. The information on how to resolve the "non member" thing is in this thread offered by Rick C. It really comes down to what page you choose as your favourite or bookmark. You can follow what Rick has said, mark that page as your favourite and then erase the other links you are using. Bob's your uncle.

Ok Ken... I'll be expecting the "real" beer. Just what is considered real? Molson Canadian is a dime a dozen around here. So it better not be that. I'm not even going to restart the one about Elsinore. Labatt light is served at our sports arena's...probably the only place they can get rid of it.

Maybe you know of some good ale's. Doesn't matter. Stop by with whatever you have. Looking forward to it. Oh yeah, bring me one of those Nestle Coffee Crisp candy bars. We can't get them in the US for some reason. I usually stock up when I go to Windsor.

Go Tiger's

Henry
HP Henry Patterson

Hey Henry... I'm with you on Go Tigers! World Series Champs 1968! Remember Denny McLain? It doesn't get any better than knocking off the Yankees. Have always liked the AL and back in the late 60's, early 70's we used to go to Tiger Stadium once or twice / year (stayed in Windsor at the Holiday Inn - Riverside) when the Orioles were in town. There were no Blue Jays back then so Detroit & Cleveland were the closest places to see Earl Weaver & Co. A buddy and I liked Baltimore. Good times.

Real Beer... how 'bout Molson's Export for one.

K. T. Shaddock

Henry, Rumor has it that Molson Canadian sold in the US is made to "suit" American beer drinkers tastes. It is not the same as what you buy in Canada. "Brewed only in Canada you say?" Well having said that I don't drink any Molson product anyway, period. Niether do I like any American wet air. But...some of your American craft brewers do a very fine job of brewing a beer/ale with taste!!!
ps I used to hang out in Walled Lake and Grand Rapids.

Hey look!! Rob is "in".

Are there any breweries left in Canada that are not owned by Americans??
Rick
Rick Crawford

Oh yeah, forgot about that RC. Well, let's perpetuate the myth.
K. T. Shaddock

I don't know if you get Big Rock Brewery products out there in the eastern boonies, but they make a mighty fine product in Canada's pre-eminent city, Calgary. Regina is right here on the outskirts of that fine metropolis, so we get plenty of their fine beers while they are fresh and tasty.

Has Sleeman's passed into American hands?

Tony
A. J. Koschinsky

Hey Ken.. My wife and I were at Tiger Stadium last Saturday to watch them win the championship. What a blast that was. I'll have to try Molson Export.

Hi Pete.. I agree with you on our common beers over here. And yes we have some mighty fine craft brewers here. Belle's is one that comes to mind. I do like a good ale for sure. Walled Lake is just a couple miles to the West of me.

I want to try some of that good Canadian brew. I'll have to look around here. I know we have some. I'll look for Sleemans. I tried a Stella Artios the other day. Not bad.. just maybe a little over hyped around here.

Hey... back to cars. I just put mine away for the season. Parked on a blue tarp as suggested in another post. Sad to put it into hibernation but I just don't see enough good days ahead to justify otherwise. It's all winterized so I won't drive it til spring. But sure I'll visit it regularly over the winter.

Henry
HP Henry Patterson

One of the slogans Molson used in their ads for Export was: "Have you had Ex today?" I'll leave that with you.

Tigers in 6 over Mets... even though they have our Carlos Delgado.

Putting cars away is sad stuff. The same with motorcycles and other summer toys. I'll go through that tug next fall after the summer of 2007 in my 76 126 TR6. I think I'll call her Dorothy after my mother. She was beautiful but a tough nut. On the bright side, I'll stare at my website pictures all winter and wear leather driving gloves when I post on the BBS. ;)

I'll have to learn what you mean about winterization re your Six. We are snowbirds and all I do is change oil and put some fuel stabilizer through our stored driver. This year I will put a tarp down too.

Ken
K. T. Shaddock

Ken,

For winterization I change the oil, put fuel stabilizer in the tank and run it through the carbs.
I then spray fogging oil (leftover from my boat winterization) into the carbs while running. I then remove the spark plugs and oil fog each cylinder. The fogging is probably overkill but that's what I do with my boat so what the hey!

Tiger in 6 over Met's... You got it!!

Keep those pic's of your TR progress coming. What is he/you going to put in for an interior...leather seats? Black? Is he replacing the wood dash with a new walnut veneer dash? Oh the possibilities.

Henry
HP Henry Patterson

Thanks for the winterize tips Henry. You mention boats... I used to do what you do but the marina I have used for many years no longer fogs engines due to carb problems in spring. They use stabilizer only now & so I have followed their lead. However, the TR6 engine is a different kettle of fish so I'll go back to tried & true methods as you describe for mine. I presume that you also remove the battery if the storage you have gets below freezing.

I will indeed populate the site when I get more pictures sent to me. It's kinda fun and the site is a freebie from the folks at Google.

The interior will indeed be black and the seats will be leather. The upholstry guy did not like the mismatch between the new vinyl seat covers for the TR6 and OE and thus suggested leather. No arguement here.

The dash was reveneered and coated with a semi-gloss finish. I have no further details at this point. More to follow. I get bits and pieces weekly from BC. I'll be using this trickle of info to keep me thinking spring!

Ken

K. T. Shaddock

Ken,

Yes I remove the battery. I put it on a bench in my garage and leave a trickle charger on it through the winter. I run wires from that battery over to my boat battery and connect them in parallel to charge them both off the same trickle charger.

Henry
HP Henry Patterson

Now we can all find out what a full restoration costs!

Ken, it's a beauty. I would love to have my 71 restored like that!

Your car will be perfect.

Now that it has started to get below 90 degrees here in Florida, I've started driving mine again. You have to wait until spring, but you'll have a ball with the car.

John
JL Bryan

Hey John...

Yep, getting cool here and have already had a snow flurry or two so cars are being put up. Some caution to you though... I hear the snowbirds around here making plans to head your way so watch out for those white haired Canucks who leave their signal on. ;) My wife and I winter in AZ & southern CA so we too can keep warm.

Thx for the comps on the car. I have had great feedback from everyone which feels good since I went into this deal from afar and without any TR6 know how. I'll provide a full report on the site once I have it here in Ontario in May.

Re restoration costs... it's interesting to compare what I am paying to the cost for restored "perfect" cars on eBay. Someone's zoomin somebody at times.

Cheers,

Ken
