Triumph TR6 - J Type Conversion

That was an interesting discussion on the 5 Speed conversion. I'v decided, at least for the moment, to not use a Toyota 5 speed. My objective is still to get an overdrive into the car without needing to have a meeting with my bankers.

So, here's the next idea:

I have a couple of Laycock J Type overdrives sitting in my workshop. These OD's came from Volvo's. Could I use these J Types on my Non-Overdrive 1973 TR6.

Here is what I think I know about using a Volvo J Type in a 73 Non-Overdrive TR6:

1. Need an OD mainshaft installed in transmission
2. Need an OD to Transmission Adapter Housing
3. Need an OD Pump Drive kit
4. Need vertical mounting studs for the rear mount.
5. Vovlo output flang too small - use the flang from the TR6 4 speed.

The Laycock J Type used in the Volvo was identical to that used in the TR6 except for the flang and rear mounting arangement - no?

What do you folks think about this idea... what am I missing (my sanity).

I don't think that you need a o/d pump drive kit as it is part of the o/d.

Things that you will need (in addition to what you listed):
- wire harness
- switch and escutcheon
- right angle speedo drive (same as MGB's use)

The only problem that I see with your plan is that you will not be able to find a transmission adaptor. No one makes them and those that have them are in use. My suggestion is to find a friend that has an o/d take it apart and get the adaptor to a foundry or place that makes castings and use it as form so that they can make a replica. While you are at it make several more and sell them on ebay...you will make back your costs and then some!

I'v been doing a lot of research into this and have found the following:

1. The adapter is not difficult to find. Readily available out of the US for about $100.

2. The pump drive kit is not part of the overdrive. It is a separate part - a concentric piece that is fitted around the input shaft.

3. The Overdrive output flange for the Volvo application is incompatible with the TR6 drive shaft. Needs to be replaced. Readily available $100.

4. The Volvo overdrive rear casting needs to be drilled and tapped to install mounting studs.

5. The non-overdrive 4 speed needs one extra switch installed on the cover plate - more drilling and tapping.

FWIW--There's a J-type up on ebaY; the owner doesn't know it's an O/D however, so there is no reserve. I confirmed with the seller that it came from a 76 TR with 'UO' commission suffix. Located in NJ.

When I looked at the listing it was $495 which is a deal considering it also comes with a tranny. Rick you are right, if the owner knew that it was an o/d listed it as a transmission with O/d and I am sure he would have had even more bidders.

For all those lacking a J-type O/D HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!!!!!
Steven

Nope. The market price is low because the seller won't ship.

Otherwise I'd bid along with about 150 other people. We can see it's an overdrive.

Might be just as well off that he won't ship. A friend of mine bought a 911 box off e-bay a couple of years ago. Well, it seemed that the seller didn't drain it before shipping. When this fine piece of equipment arrived at the shop where we do most of our car playing, we had to contend with one PO'ed brown suited driver and help wipe up the worst of the mess it had left in the truck.

Tranny sold for $761.00. Add shipping probable close to $900.00 total
