Triumph TR6 - J Type O/Drive Neutral Safety Switch

Otherwise known as Overdrive Relay I believe.
Hello Gurus !! Here's one. After getting to drive the beast for a couple hundred miles I noticed a bad tranny leak... The tranny was just rebuilt !! Shift forks, syncros.. the lot. The "reputable" tranny shop was kind enough to examine and realized the leak was coming out of the top cover area via the shift rod seals... OK he didn't replace them... Takes it all apart, installs the seals, puts it all back together, I drive home and no overdrive... !! Tear the tunnel off after, checking wire for 12 volt etc. to get at the O/D 3,4 switch on top etc. Nothing making sense no 12 v. either side of the neutral safety switch in 3rd or 4th.. Remove switch and run conductivity, works perfect... Examine the shift rod inside the tranny hole of the n/s/s and when the tranny is in 3rd and 4th the shift bar has the recess hole for opening the switch ( as would be neutral) ??? This doesn't seem right as the switch should be closed.. Correct.?? .. Now .. when I shift through 1st and 2nd .. presto .. Voltage to the solenoid and the shift bar is in contact with the switch.... Is it possible to load these shift rods back in reverse ... Has my 30 year tranny guy screwed up again ?? There's no way of getting 12 v to the solenoid via 3 & 4th only via 1st and 2nd.
Trannies aren't my favorite passtime... I can't make sense of it.

Back in the garage ... shift cover off for now.

Any ideas ?
Thanks
Garry

J types do not have a OD relay at all. A types do however. They are called an overdrive interupter switch (ODIS) and yes only works on 3rd and 4th gear. This switch is "normally open". It only closes when you are in 3rd or 4th gear then throw the OD switch and presto the solenoid should activate.

I can not say if the shift rods can be installed backwards. BUT it sure sounds like they can be from what you say.
Simply put, ONLY in gears 3 and 4 should you have 12 V at the solenoid with the OD switch on (and the ignition key on). It does sound like something is wrong in the reassembly.

Something to consider. In an A type OD you have ODISs for all 4 gears as you can go into OD in all 4 gears. May be the factory just "reversed" the install of the rod to take away OD from lower gears. Could it be that your tranny go mistook his left for his right?

Also take a look at PLATE CL TRF Vol 1. This might help you determine if yours are in backwards.

Maybe someone with some real tranny knowledge could chime in here.

Would like to hear your results of this one Garry.

Gary-I doubt if it would be possible to assemble the top cover to the trans. case and shift gears if the shift rods were incorrectly installed. The inhibitor switch makes it impossible for the od to engage except when in 3rd or 4th. There is a protrusion on the 3-4 shift fork that pushes on a spring loaded ball on the underside of the switch, when it 3rd or 4th. When the inhibitor switch is closed, power flows from the col. switch to the sol., providing that the ign.is on and the col. switch is in the od position. The inhibitor switch is installed on the top cover in line with the center shift rod (3-4) either at the front or the rear, depending on the year. Your top cover should look ck7 or ck8 on plate ck of the vol. 1 TRF catalog.
One wire on the switch goes to the sol, the other to the col switch.

Unless the hole was drilled for the 1-2 shift rail, there should be no switch there. I'm still trying to wrap my tired old brain around it, still don't make sense. If your tunnel is still off, check which position the switch is in.....with a J, it should be position B in the diagram below. You don't have a switch in A, do you?

Thanks again Guys. Perfect info confirming what I found today. Well here's the scoop after taking an unfrustrated look at everything and how it works today in my shop.... Instead of racing home last night from work and trying to get her done. After reviewing which shift rods are doing all the moving etc. well....
When my tranny guy fixed the seals in the rods he reversed the wires (green ones and of course the yellow purple wires) He put the yellow purple on the side neutral safety switch and the green wires on the top 3rd 4th switch. All my photos of taking the engine and tranny out paid off and bingo there it was. ( I should get these pics from work to the home computer.) Duh... I was kind enough to phone him and thank him. Ohh.. sorry man.
By the by Rick.. where are you located in Ontario ?
Keep up the great work.

Gary-That what I was thinking-the wires to the switches were switched. The switch on the side is for the reverse lights.

As usual after a repair, the answer is simple. I recently replaced my steering column bushes and of course the speedo must come out along with disconnecting all lights and switches on the left side area. Well I lost my gas and temp gauge 4 weeks later. I am not looking forward to lying on my back and getting my hand up to the voltage stabilizer...I know I will disconnect something else.
You are welcome
