Triumph TR6 - Jag SU's

Hi All

Anyone know whether SU carbs from a 1958 mk1 Jag would fit on the TR6 manifold?

Regards, Neil Peniston.

Aren't they just 8's?

Hello,

Well two types of SU were on Jag. in those days HD8 & HD6. HD6 are 1-3/4" and will suit TR6 manifold. HD8 are 2' and manifold must be overbore if possible to accomodate them. But you will face a needle problem and must change them as 3.4 or 3.8 Jag. engine are quite different than 2.5 TR6 engine.

Cheers,

I bought a pair of old Jag SUs for my TR6 some years back. Besides the needle issue, instead of a conventional SU choke, they had a thermo (AKA auxilliary) carburetor. I bought another pair SUs from a Volvo and am still sorting out needle issues and choke linkages. If I had it to do all over, I would think about buying the proper carbs new.

Neil just asked if they fit. The answer is yes.
If he wants to know if they are suggested he better ask another question

Ken-I used SUs from a Volvo on my 6. What problems are you having with choke linkage? At the present, I am using BAG needles and 8 oz springs. Let me know if I can help.

Berry,

The attachments for the choke cables on the ZS carbs are both toward the rear of the engine. On the SU carbs, the rear carb choke cable attaches toward the front of the engine and the cable housing is a bit too short. As a temporary measure, I've extended the cable housing with a length of copper tubing, but I've either got to find a longer cable & housing, or maybe look at the TR4A linkage.

I had to dummy up the throttle shaft connection between the carbs a bit too, because the Volvo mounted the float bowls between the carbs and had some strange levers connecting the carbs.

Thanks for the suggestion on the needles. I've made numerous inquiries elsewhere; this is the first definitive suggestion I've received. The snow and ice finally seem to be gone for good and I've got to get the beast out on the street.

Ken-You can order the choke cables used on the PI cars from TRF, which are longer and cost about $50. Or you can remove the shorter cable from your present cable, buy a bicycle cable for about $2, cut it about 4" longer than the removed cable and silver soldier it.
I reversed the carbs so that the float bowls are outboard of the carb bodies. Also, the carbs come with 30 deg. adapters on the bowls and are incorrect for the TR6 manifold flange, which is almost vertical. You can either remove the locating tab on the present adapter and move the float bowl until the top is level or order the correct adapters from Joe Curto.

Berry,
I had already figured out the adaptors, and reversed the carbs. Thanks for the tips on the needles and choke cable.

Neil,
Don is absolutely right!
