Triumph TR6 - Limitless Slip Diff

Yep - you read it right. The R200 diff just plain quit yesterday - left me stranded. Just driving down the road and lost power to the wheels. Hopefully it won't cost too much to repair. Could this have been an application where too slick a gear oil (Redline) could have caused the failure?

Gee Brent - that's bad luck. Had the same thing happen on a corner when one of my custom made roller-spline axles sheared at the yolk. Peed me off greatly as I had them made buy a firm who were certified to carry out modifications to ambulances. Luckily my insurance includes a free towing service.

Moral of the story...stay fit and healthy so you never have to risk a ride in an ambulance !!

Little of subject but it reminds me of a differential problem I had with my TR about 25 years ago. I was going on a charter salmon fishing trip and was driving over to the coast when something let go. I turned around and nursed it back home 30 miles. It felt like a machine gun being fired from the trunk. When I opened it up I found a tooth had broken off the pinion like a pulled tooth. The broken tooth has been sitting in desk drawr and I'm looking at it now. Memories. I think I'll get some salmon tonight (if I can afford it).

saw a rebuilt diff on ebay just the other day. looked like a good deal.

Brent, what rear bushing are you running? Another question would be how worn are the sliding splines on your axle? Per Richard Good, if the snap rings on the differential stub axle and there is then sufficient sideways movment of the stub, power will not be transmitted to the wheels.

He gave me those warnings when I was getting my set up from him and I noticed that it is now shown on the web page for the diff conversion.

Steve - I have the spring inside the half-shaft to prevent that power loss and the splines are in real good shape. Using the Nylatron bushes. The diff let go with no noise on a straight road while not driving hard. I've been battling the half-shaft flange bolts (worst job on the car, and I'm getting ready to grind down a 9/16" wrench so it won't interfere with the u-joints) and found the right diff output flange now has a tendency to slide out of the diff housing. I'll have to check on it more when I get the thing out.

Got the diagnosis, but haven't looked at the parts. Nothing wrong with the diff, the snap rings on the stub axle were gone. Gonna be $200 - $250 and a few days to fix. The failure was likely related to the half shaft binding - although I took great care to clean & grease it. I'll clean & use a Redline grease - it shouldn't harden. Those suckers will be slick as can be. If this happens again it's back to the stock differential and I'll sell the LS kit. I do have the Nylatron bushes, btw, and I'll check that side for anything loose that might have contributed to the failure.
Brent B

OK - Finally got around to pulling the inboard half-shafts to clean them up again and found the dust cap missing from the yoke on the side that had the diff failure. I think it's significant because that's the female part of the axle where the spring included with the GP kit rests. With no base to support the spring there's of course no force to push the half-shafts apart. Plus dust could have gotten in the grease to make it a sticky paste at least at the end so the shafts couldn't slide well on the splines. Arrr.

Repairs have been affected and the remaining dust cap has been reinforced.
