Triumph TR6 - Master cylinder & booster

Last year I was temporarily relocatd and had to leave my '6 unused for 8+ months. I changed all fluids before its hibernation. I checked it a few days ago and noticed the rear reservior section (front brakes) of the brake MC was empty. There are no leaks at the wheels, PDWA or piping. My booster is a bit wet under the MC and some fluid is oozing from the booster inside the car. In short, my MC is bad and booster is probably full.

The simple answer is to buy a new MC and booster but I was wondering if anyone has experience w/ Apple Hydraulics or any other rebuilder and if anyond has experience with the new production but slightly different boosters that Moss and others carry.

Thanks & regards, Wayne

Wayne-I recently had my booster rebuilt by Partco (www.partcoautomotive.com/)for $85 plus shipping. This vendor is recommended by Nelson Riedel on the Buckeye Triumph site at: www.buckeyetriumphs.org. Check out the tech articles on booster rebuilding and other topics.

Wayne,
You might want to try a master rebuild first all that time sitting may have dryed out the seals and it slowly bled thru with the amount of fluid in the front side it will push thru very easy.(hope it wasn't dot 3) This happened to me twice last year, I think it is the master seals not the booster, when you look at the seal you can see how it would leak, it is not a tough rebuild.
The buckeye triumphs site has good directions for it.

Where in Mass are you from? I am in Lakeville. I think that the booster can be cleaned out fairly easily too Luckily I did not have to. After I got the master rebuilt I was still leaking I rebuilt another master and then found that I was leaking out of the top of the pdwa. It is a real bitch to get up every morning to a purple puddle under your car.

At the cost of DOT 5 I can appreciate that:)

Wayne,
I got a rebuilt MC and front calipers from Apple about a year and a half ago. Good service, quick delivery, and so far so good on the work. This is the first I've worked on brakes, so I don't know what to look for. But it doesn't leak at all, hasn't needed any more bleeding (so I guess no air leaking in), and the car stops like it should.

I don't remember the price, but it was listed on their website.

Good luck,

I got a rebuilt booster from Partco, too. They were a pleasure to work with - no problems. Probably a half pint of fluids came out of the old unit once I took it off, so it was time.

The master cylinder was pitted towards the end of the bore - where the seal rests ordinarily. Rather than resleeve, I cleaned and filled in the pits with Devcon stainless steel epoxy, then honed it all smooth prior to the rebuild. So far, so good.

All,

Thank you for the replies. I'll probably try the rebuild first and see how it goes. As far as the booster, I'll probably give Partco a call. It looks pretty sad.

Keith, I am from Hopkinton but living in CA for the time being. The '6 will get much more than its usual winter sleep this year. If you've been to Day of Triumph at MOT we've been the only Magenta car for the past few years.

The car only gets Castrol LMA, no DOT 3 here.

QUESTION: My brakes on my recently aquired TR6 are very weak when I first hit them, but if I pump them a few times they feel really good. I am NOT loosing any fluid (level in the resivoir does not go down), and I have found no leaks.

And my "Brake" light stays on.

Anyone? Thanks!!!

Hi Mike
..sounds to me that you have air in your brake lines...they may need to be bled..as far as the brake light..there is a warning switch in your system that lights up on your dash when one side of your brake system has less pressure than the other side..the switch will need to be centered before the light will go out...check out www.buckeyetriumphs.org web site..There is a tech article on this switch... Ah, silly of me. I bet you are right about the air in the lines. I saw this old booster on there, and I am more of a Spitfire/GT6 guy. Looking at it, I went from A to C without thinking about B - the obvious one.

Oy. 6-week old babies can really screw up your brain!

Thanks.
