Triumph TR6 - Mocal adapter leaks

I would like to hear from some of you who have had oil leaks with your Mocal adapter and how you repaired it. Mine leaks between the oil cooler connections and the adapter. I'm afraid that if I torque them down that I may strip the threads on the aluminum adapter.I don't want to proceed with the repair and find out that it still leaks. Please help!!

I don't know if it is Mocal or what, but when I installed my oil cooler every place it could leak did. I backed off all fittings to make sure they were not binding, then tightened the crap out of them, no more leaks (9 years plus). I remember having to tighten them much more than I thought neccesary.

In retrospect I might try teflon tape as well.

Good Luck

Hi Ben, I think that the mocal adapter needs to have neoprean sealed washers (bonded seals) installed between the hoses and filter housing. Make certain that those contact surfaces are flat, smooth and clean and that the washer seals are sharp and resilient... or install new ones... about $1 each at www.sealsonline.com

Don't know if my '76 has a Mocal unit, or some other make, however same problem. The final fix in my case was to hand cut two largish washers from a sheet of 1/16 th COPPER stock, then anheal [sp?] them with a pencil tip flame on a propane cylinder. Heat until they barely begin to glow, then back off gradually with the heat. With these installed between the hoses and the filter housing......not a hint of a leak! As Rob says, make sure the contact surfaces are flat, smooth and clean. With this treatment, plus a lot of other "tweaking"we were able to drive to Portland Or.,tour for two weeks, then drive to the Resort on tne Mountain for the ATDI a couple of summers ago. With my hand on my heart I can truly say that we added the FIRST liter of oil at the drive in! We have a total of 5 trips by TR-6 Toronto/West coast [Oregon, British Columbia] in the last 6-7 yrs. always the same. One liter out, one back. I'm sure the ax will fall some day!!

Good luck!

Benji--I fixed my leaks with a good dose of that pliable brown Permatex gasket goop on the threads before cranking the nut down.

Thanks for all the advise. I decided to have a Jag guy fix my adapter. When he took the connections off the adapter, he found rubber seals in the washers. He said that I've got a oil pressure problem and that the oil pressure valve may not be operating correctly. This is the reason it's leaking. I've got about 30-40psi at idle, almost 70 psi at highway speed. What oil pressure readings do you blokes have?
Thanks again for the help....

Those pressures are fine. If your Jag guy thinks those pressures are causing the leaks, tell him to think of a different theory.
Rick Orthen

Yup... those are the bonded seals I mentioned. Your oil pressures sound just fine. Have the oil by-pass valve checked including the bore it runs in to ensure proper by pass opperation under high RPM. Nevertheless, I would bet the problem is simply that the seals have seen better days and should be replaced.
