Triumph TR6 - More questions from JohnB in SoFl

My continuing saga, well, it continues. Remember that I know nothing about cars except what I have learned here, from the various web sites and from the Bentley manual. Sears had a sale, so I am now the proud owner of a jack and 4 jack stands. Despite the busy weekend, I had the 71 TR6 up on jack stands this weekend. Believing that my persistent fluid drip was gear oil, I finally got the filler plug out, and to my surprise, it was so full it was overflowing--that ain't my leak! I noticed that the oil sump and the gear box are pretty well coated in very heavy oil residue, some of which I wiped off or sprayed off. Could a front oil seal leak be causing that and my high oil consumption?

Another interesting note. 2 of the bolts on the bell housing were missing, and I did replace them. I noticed an orifice (thats a hole to you, Jim) on the housing with nothing in it. In the Bentley manual, in the bottom picture on page 278 and the middle picture on page 279, they show the smae opening between the bolts. I guess it should be open.

Could my oil problems be the front oil seal? It isn't leaking from the drain plug or from the filter. It is leaking some from the valve cover bolts, but I think getting the fibre washes will help that.

By the way, my 12 year old and I had a ball putting the old car up on jack stands and crawling around under it.

John - you'd have puddles of oil under the car if the fiber washers or seal were 100% the cause. Again - you're talking a quart in 300 miles. A front seal, timing chain cover, oil an leak is not uncommon at all, but it's not going to be that big. Just a few drips that dirty things up.

Brent, the leak on the garage floor is fairly low quantity, but persistent. I think you are right that it is blowing it out due to too much oil pressure--the gauge reads really high (90 or so) until I get pretty warmed up, and then it stays around 50. Also, oil kind of seeps through the valve cover bolts while I am driving. I'm pretty much shooting in the dark here, so that's why I need help.

The gearbox plug you found is also a 'level' plug. That is, that's how you tell when it's full.

It's supposed to do that.

Jim and Brent, how do I figure this one out? The drip on the floor is minor, so that isn't where the oil is going. The caked on oil residue underneath has got to be coming from somewhere forward of the oil sump, I'm sure. The filter doesn't seem to be leaking. The fact that the leak is very minor when the car is sitting would seem to me to indicate that the oil is coming out when the car is under way, which could go back to the too much pressure issue you guys mentioned. I guess I should try Brent's can trick next, but other than that, I am stumpted. John.
