Triumph TR6 - Muffler Warning...

My new muffler arrived today and what a dissapointment... Can you tell what's wrong from the picture? Or am I too picky?

DWS Smith

I'd ship 'em back ASAP. Where'd you get 'em?

Doug…

This is what Moss is currently standing behind as a functional replacement. They also want me to ship it back to them at my own cost and will not refund me any of the to or from shipping charges. They inspected a few off the shelf and all of the mild Steele mufflers have the angle on the tailpipe as depicted in the picture. I am pretty disappointed in the service at Moss at the moment as this is the second issue I have experienced with no support from them. My goal is not to slam them but mostly wanted to get the word out on the current issues with all of the mild Steele mufflers out there. I spoke with an engineer at the roadster factory today and they have the same product issue as the large distributor’s source from the same shop in the UK. The stainless mufflers are much better but cost three times the amount as the mild Steele.

DWS,,
This is just P...poor work. I purchased the stainless for longevity etc and am completely pleased. The comparison to your photo is profound. I'll try to get a photo tomorrow and upload it so that you can compare. You MAY be money ahead to pay the carriage and go get a SS from TRF. Charles will not treat you the way Moss has, nor will Jeff Zorn at LBC.com. There're 2ndary manufacturers who have this item that's much better manufactured that what you've shown here.

Yes Doug you have a point...

I must say this resto has been an education. A few coins have gone down the drain on sub standard items that I can't bring myself to use. Has sort of taken a bit of the fun out of it as well...

Press on I say...
DWS Smith

Aye, I well understand. I'm beginning my 6th year on this one year restoration project!!! Only Don Kelly is takin longer:-)

Yowzer...I wouldn't let a weld like that out of my sight as a person who welds let alone ship it out to someone OR have the audacity to demand ship at your expense. I'd call back and get a different rep on the phone. I recently got a finned alloy valve cover from VB with a questionable oil inlet sealing surface....they not only sent me another one THEY SAID KEEP THE BAD ONE....NO CHARGE!!! They didn't want to see or get it back...they said "what would we do with it if it's bad" and said they would pass the info along to their QA section. Thats service...with a smile.

JT I couldn't agree more... I am taking it to a higher level in letter form. Won't be spending anything at Moss unless it gets resolved. I don't know how anyone can afford to burn customers in this horrible economy.
DWS Smith

I agree

They must be held to account for shoddy work. Take it to the highest level and let them know that the TR6 community talks.

I have the SS muffler and went that way for longevity as well. From TRF. No obtuse weld on it. And I hope I won't have to change it for the next 50 years (my Kids can deal with it after I am dead)

DWS:
Unacceptable quality there and despicable response from Moss. You should also consider informing Moss that you are taking their product and their response to the Triumph Forums. British Car Forum for one is running threads about inferior quality Moss Classic Gold products so I think the moderator would also add that excuse for a muffler to their gripe list. Imagine the grief Moss could save themselves by treating you right! This is especially an issue because they sell the Falcon stainless system, which I have and the muffler is top quality and side by side makes yours look like a patched up product of some backyard garage. No offense meant to shade tree mechanics. IMHO, the fact that Moss sells this inferior-looking product alongside the very good Falcon stainless reproduction leads me to believe they really don't care how you feel about it. Go get 'em and good luck!

I wasn't aware of the BCF but will take a look for sure... Thanks for the support guys...
DWS Smith

I don't think Basil would do that unless you word it correctly.
It would be in the Vendor area.

Also being his first post , another reason

Might have a point there Don. Maybe his (DWS's) first post to BCF (after joining up) could be his original thread as above with one change; see caps. No reason not to post that, which leaves him open to questions/comments from BCF members:
"My new muffler arrived today (FROM MOSS MOTORS)and what a dissapointment... Can you tell what's wrong from the picture? Or am I too picky?"
I think he'd get a few hits on that. Then he could inform the forum of the Moss response.
