Triumph TR6 - My wife had an interesting question

My 71 TR6 is sitting on jack stands in the garage, with no engine in it. The engine is being rebuilt and whilst it is out, I was doing some cosmetic stuff. Well, it turned out that the floorboards on both side are pretty rusted and I have spent a good number of hours with wire brushes, manual and on my drill, seeing what was there.

A prior owner had bondoed some of the areas and then just painted over them without really curing any of the problems.

After lots of manual labor, I am painting the inside of the floorboards tomorrow with POR-15. I have 3 holes that are about the size of a quarter and maybe 8 or 9 smaller ones. The smaller ones covered up pretty well with the POR patch stuff.

I made the mistake of telling the wife that the floorboards really needed replacing, but I thought this would put it off for 4 or 5 years, at which time I would probably be looking at having the body taken off the frame to do all this stuff.

Her question--why would you spend that much on a car that will be 40 years old by then?

I'm not sure I have a very good answer to that, but I probably will do it unless I find enough problems that I sell this one and get another one!

John-Two possible answers come to mind:
1.If you would ask that question, you probably wouldn't understand the answer.
2. The same logic could be applied to spouses.

True, Berry, very true.

The POR-15 experiment really starts tomorrow. I scraped and used wire brushes for hours to get down to as good metal as possible. The POR-15 patch has dried pretty quickly (3 or 4 hours) and feels really hard. The little holes are covered up.

Tomorrow, I am going to try to paint the floorboards inside with the POR-15 and repair the bigger holes with their power mesh product. There does not appear to be any serious rust anywhere except the floorboards, but I do plan on putting the POR on the frame and the underside of the floorboards.

I'll let everyone know how it goes.

You'll get by a long time on this repair. Who cares what female logic comes up with? That's an asset, being 40 years old, not a liability.

It is simple.
When you drive the 40 year old car it makes you feel and act like a 20 year old..........

John- it is a good thing your wife doesn't practice that reasoning on you as I am sure if you'r like the rest of us your car was produced when you where a teenager. I think my doctor or dentist might question the philosphy of fixing a 40 plus year old body!
By the way my floor boards are shot too but my wife says I am to old too fix them and is hoping for a newer model.

John I guess the romantic appeal of a warm evening drive or a sunset over a lake would be the same in a minivan to some people----- so you have to try something more practical.
How about pointing out that if you don't fix it all the money you have spent on buying and maintainig it will be wasted as it will become a valueless rustbucket.
That should bring tears to her eyes!

I should tell her that I really appreciate and value old things! Maybe old things that don't look so old, she might go for that one!

The POR-15 worked pretty good. It took more than the POR people said, but we do have about 90% humidity down here. It covered the pin holes well and feels really solid. Next, I need to do the underside and the frame! I think that will be easier as there does not appear to be any rust there!

It is a good product.

john,

how much POR did you purchase to paint the frame and how do you work around bushings, bolts, nuts, etc?
