Triumph TR6 - New engine

Hello everone
i thought i saw something in the past,but could not find it in the archives.i'am about 200 miles into
the break in of my rebuilt mtr, and notice that upon starting the car say within 10 min. after a nice run
(mtr still hot ) i see a puff of white smoke upon
start up,have'nt notice any when mtr is cold.
Is this normal?

Is it white smoke or steam? Does it smell sweet like antifreeze? Have you lost any coolant?

Have you been varying the engine speed under light load which seats the rings? Smoke under acceleration is usually indicative of worn rings. Smoke on deceleration usually means shot valve guides.

Pull the plugs and see if they are all identical in color & deposits.

it is smoke and not steam, and i have been avoiding
any load to the mtr. as adviced by mechanic i've
been taking it easy and slowly going thru the gears.
i thought i read in a previous post this was expected
untill all the new parts have settled

Yeah, at only 200 miles you will still have some oil leaking past the rings. What weight/type oil are you using? Ask the machinist what oil the motor is clearanced for. eg 5/30W or 20/50W

Sorry I didn't read your post carefully enough but I just noticed you said a puff at start up when the motor's warm. That's usually a valve guide issue. Did you get bronze guides or the stock cast iron? Or perhaps the mechanic knurled your originals? What's there makes a difference as does the type of seal if any was used. Ask the mechanic.

It's also possible your crankcase isn't venting properly and it's pressurized. That would push oil down the guides.

IMHO, a little oil leaking in isn't a bad thing with these old tractor motors! I'd still pull the plugs to see if it's one cylinder acting up.

If it's set a little rich, the smoke won't be really black. The smell would tell you more than anything. Coolant, oil, and fuel smell distinctly different. I wouldn't panic about it just yet, give the rings a chance to seat.

If you have the exernal oil feed line to the rear of the head installed, remove it and see if your smoking disappears.
