Triumph TR6 - New Tires
Anyone familar with or has used either TOYO or MAXXIS tires? Diamond Back offers both in 205/70R15 and touts the Toyo as the BEST classic tire available. Arew the Michelin MX performance tires or like the older Michelin, OE, for the TR6? Thanks. db |

Doug Ken Shaddock should have info on this. Hopefully he has not gone south yet and sees this. Rick |

DOUG, I bought Toyo for my wife's MGB and dislike them. Maxiss is unknown to me. My prefered ones are Pirelli Scorpion STR, H speed rated like originals TR6 XAS. Cheers, Jean G. |

Hello Doug: Spring of 2011 I purchased 4 Pirelli P5 for my '72,205/70/R15. Since the early '80s I've been a Michelin customer and I continue to believe that Michelin is a good product but for older cars Michelin does not always support the sizes needed and if they do the price is not competitive. Pirelli P5 has good traction, quite and a good smooth ride on straight rims. My tire salesman told me to keep the inflation no less than 26 PSI. No matter what brand you buy, be aware that rim design has changed and tire bead has changed, 20 PSI in the front as per manual is not enough for even mild aggresive driving. Trevor Stock |

TS, Jean, Thanks for the information. TS, I'm OK with the Michelin price if they're worth what they cost; if not, I'm seeking the BEST tire I can get from quality, safety, driveability perspectives. I do not want to skimp on tires and have one fail at 5500RPM. I've driven Pirelli (if I recall correctly), but it was a long time ago so I don't recall much about them other than having had a set or two. Most of my recent experience (~40 years) has been Goodyear Wranglers. I've driven a Jeep most of my life. I have original Redlines on the rims now, but will not put them on the ground again unless it's to show and I doubt I'd go to that trouble of remounting just for showing so I need dependable, safe, affordable tires. I'll check into the Pirelli you reference. Thanks again. db |

the tires on my 6 are getting old so I've been thinking about new tires as well. If you visit some E-Type forums it looks like the tire of choice for the Jags (same size tire as original equipment) is the Vredestein Sprint Classic. It can be had in the US of A for less than a Stephen King's ransom, unlike here in the frozen north. I'd be interested in knowing whether anyone here has tried them on a TR6. Tony |

I've identified 17 different tires that'll work on the -6 most but not all, 205-70R-15 and a handful of 185R15. Diamond Back will provide 7 of these with the classic red stripe. I have those data in a spread sheet, but for simplicity, here's the list Manufacturer Model size Michelin XAS 205/70R15 Dunlop SP Sport AT 215/65R15 ------------------ Diamond Back Classics w/Red Line 205/70R15 Dunlop 205/70R15 Michelin Diamond Back MX 205/70R15 Goodyear 205/70R15 Hancock 205/70R15 Toyo Diamond Back II 205/70R15 Cooper Fury 205/70R15 Maxxis DB HR 205/70R15 -------------------- Kumbo Essta HP$ 206/65R15 Yokohama 195/65R15 Pirelli P6000 215/65R15 Pirelli P4000 (or P600HR) 205/70R15 Goodyear Acqua Tread 205/70R15 Goodyear Assurance, Triple Tread 205/70R15 Universal Vredestain Classic Sport 185/R15 Cooper 780AA There may be others out there readily available that I did not find so feel free to add to the list. A few discriminators will winnow this list to a select one or few from which to choose. |
