Triumph TR6 - NewEmmission Standards In Ontario

I just read in the Toronto Star this morning that a change has been made to Ontario's Drive-Cllan legislation that starting in 2007, cars 20 yrs and older will be tested every 2 years.

Well, my will fail without even being tested, being that the orig. stuff has been long removed. Heck, you cannot even purchase a NOS EGR valve anymore.

I expect we'll be hearing alot more of this thru car clubs.

Looks like the Toronto Star did not get it exactly correct.

From the Drive-Clean website: "20 year old rolling exemption of light duty vehicles eliminated. Testing of model years 1988 and newer (effective January 1, 2006; will be implemented January 1, 2009)"

Funny, I have heard the Drive clean program is to be scrapped.

"20 year old rolling exemption ......eliminated. This means our cars WILL be tested, right.
I'm planning to start restoation of a TR6 this winter.
Should I just forget "fuggeddabowtit"?

Hi Dennis,

Like P Johnston stated and from the news release our cars will still be exempt. The new 20 year rule will start in 2009 for car from 1988 and newer. So go ahead and start your restauration, once completed enjoy one of the most fun ride you can ever have.

Sylvain:

That's how I'd like to interpret the wording, but I'm not so convinced that the exemption for our vehicle is retained. There appears to be some ambiguity in the Ministry's wording.

Any others have input on this?

Happy Thanksgiving to all our US participants!

This is from the "Driveclean" WEB site:

Which older cars are exempt from Drive Clean testing?
Drive Clean’s decision to end its rolling age-based exemption for light-duty vehicles from emissions testing requirements only affects 1988 and newer models.

Under current rules, a light-duty vehicle’s last test is required when it is 19 years old, whether for registration renewal or ownership transfer. Therefore, if you own a 1986 vehicle, its emissions test in 2005 is its last. If you own a 1987 vehicle that requires a test in 2006, it will be the last test for that vehicle.

But 1988 vehicles -- which require emissions tests in 2007 -- stay in the program. They will need to be tested again in 2009 and every two years after that for registration renewal. Similarly, 1989 models will require testing in 2008 and every two years after that. As well, the requirement for a valid Drive Clean pass for ownership transfer will continue to apply to 1988 and newer models.

Drive Clean is also seeking public comment on a proposal that annual emissions tests be required beginning when a light duty vehicle is 12 years old for 1988 and newer models. No tests would be required for 1987 and older vehicles. However, no decision will be made on a requirement for annual tests until the public consultation is complete.

Also continuing to be exempt from any test requirements are vehicles designated and plated by the Ministry of Transportation as “historic” which will be exempt well into the future.

Hello,

Historic here in province of Québec means that you could not go on H-ways. I saw an XKE in good shape with such license plate. Too bad...
