Triumph TR6 - Normal operating Temperature

Car: 1973 TR-6 Does anyone know what the normal operating range for temperature is on our cars? And for that matter what is the "danger zone"?
Abner

Hi Abner

By the book temperature should not exceed 185F. So if your reading 180 3/4 reading on gauge is about right. Is your fan shroud in place? Hows your timing? Both will affect temp. Does the temp cool down running.

Thanks Bill,
Yes the shroud is in place and no the temp does not change when running. Does the gague itself have calibrating capabilities that you know of? So at 1/2 the temp should be like 165?
Abner

Abner-A person on the 6 pack list made a comparison of the TR6 gauge markings vs a mechanical gauge and found that 180 deg. was between the 2 small dots and 210 was slightly below the redline. A full list should be in the 6pack archieves.

Abner, I have found that the needle just touching the 3/4 mark is exactly 200F.
You don't want to go past that by much.
This was done with an acurate temp gage.
If you are reading less than this you are fine.
But it never hurts to do a complete system flush
on car this old.

Hi Abner

Not sure of the calibration option on original Gauges. Will check mine all apart for rebuild and let you know.

180 is not a bad operating temp.. Here in Canada. 190 thermostats are normal due to cold temps.. +210 on a -30 Winter morning is nice.:) Unless the car is overheating sitting idling you are not causing any damage. Remember the book settings at least the ones I have are from England. +70s a hot day. California was nothing more than a dream.

The one thing I have run into on recores is the volume flow rate. How long the coolant has in the rad to disapate heat. If recore restriction does not match the pump flow it will tend to run hotter. The wetter RickC mentioned in your other post may help.

Running a steady 180 constant? If you have that temp. meter. Try reading the temp. input and out on metal of rad. Depending on meter might show whats happening. If its multi purpose you want the little metal glob? Hows that for a tech. description. And no I am not sure of what the drop should be. Never tested on a TR.
