Triumph TR6 - Odometer Repair

Hello Gents

After replacing the angle drive on my tranny I have a working speedometer but the odometer does not work... maybe a stripped gear. I have not taken it out as yet to have a look.

It has been suggested that I check into Nisonger Instruments in NY re repair. I called them and indeed they believe they can fix it. Before I do that, has anyone had experience at repairing these gizmos? Is it a do it yourselfer or do I box it up for repair at this NY shop?

I wouldn't use them. The original people sold and the new owners are a little hard to work with is what I hear. There are many other good people. Maybe even in USA North

Ken-Usually when the speedo works but the odometer doesn't, either the pawl that drives the number sprocket has slipped off or a tooth has stripped from the gear that drives the pawl. Here is a website with info on Smith and Jaeger instuments:

Also, for an instrument repair facility, google Palo Alto Speedometer. They do quality work and have been in business for many years.

The spedo is a delicate instrument kinda like a watch. This is not a summer job. Keep driving your new toy and wait till you go south and be sitting in the sun with a wobbly pop...then fix it.

OH YA why not have a look at that CD I sent you.

Has a very nice .PDF om how to repair The Smith's and Jeager's spedometers.

Rick, Ken,
If I recall correctly, in addition to the Smith Repair manual on CD I, I believe that we also included reference to a reputable repair shop. Don't recall...it's been too long.

That CD sits right beside the computer here at Washago TR6 Mission Control and do you think I can get it into my head to look there first!? Sorry guys.

Thanks Berry... I'll consider both options. Palo Alto and the wobbly pop and picnic table option this winter in FL.

And you are right Rick... some of what I'm doing is winter work. I just get carried away on the things to do list and forget to just get out there and drive.

I emailed Palo Alto last night and received a prompt and courteous response today from a Hartmut Mees with a full explanation of their process and an estimate of approx $185 plus shipping pending the condition of the instrument. They keep all parts in stock and their turn around time is a couple of weeks plus UPS time.

If I go this route I'll post my experience so the thread can help others.

Thanks everyone.

I used a company called Gauge Guys. Check them out. They changed my tach to electric.
