Triumph TR6 - Oil Flow To Top End

In priming the freshly rebuilt engine with the drill and dowel method I am not getting any oil to the top end of the motor. I even removed the plug in the rear of the head where the external oil line feed would go and no oil at all. The pump is primed and oil is going everywhere with plenty of preasure except upward...
Is it possible the assemblly lube is blocking the small pathways and this will open up once the motor turns and warms up?
DWS Smith

Actually not much oil would be getting up there when you do it.
Main thing is you are getting pressure movement at the gauge

Try a faster drill and if it doesn't work then there is something wrong. Don is right that not a lot of oil goes there, but you can take out the external oil feed and check if there is any oil inside the pipe.
Kypros Christodoulides

I don't have an external line. I just used the line in refference to the opening on the rear of the head. I removed the bolt and turned the pump over to see if any oil at all was in the chamber of the head at all. I guess sometimes the small opening in the rocker pedesstal can get blocked and prevent the flow of oil to the rockers. With no oil in the chamber at all rules that out. The drill was at high speed and no oil up top. Yes it was in reverse. Im wondering if the cam needs to be turning to let the oil past it as it's my understanding that the pathway to the head goes through the area where the cam rides at the far rear.

Don... i'm getting plenty at the block where the gauge line attaches and all other journal in the block just nada up high...
DWS Smith

I think there are 1 or 2 flats on the rear cam journal that will only allow oil to flow to the head when the flats are aligned with the oil gallery in the block. Rotate the crank until you see oil flowing to the head.

BT... I turned the crank a bit and now have oil up in the head. Thanks so much for the helpful advise...

DWS Smith

Glad it solved your problem. My guess is that using 1 or two flats instead of a groove is to restrict the amount of oil going to the head. That is an impressive engine compartment.

Berry... Yes I agree... Thank you on the complment... It's been five years in the building and it's almost go time... I must admit I was sweating the oil thing a bit... Thanks again...

fuel pressure gauge and a reg.
Why not have both on one thing?
Don Kelly

Don... Does someone make a combo gauge/regulator for low preasure applications?
DWS Smith

Don... Does someone make a combo gauge/regulator for low preasure applications? I'm coming in to the regulator at 6lbs and the goal is to step down to 2.5 lbs... I kind of like this set up as each carb has its own feed...
DWS Smith

DWS,
I also had difficulty, not getting oil to the rocker, but getting enough. Never got oil to #1 cylinder. Finally decided that I just could not generate enough oil pressure to extend that far down the rocker arm. Got good flow at cylinders 6-4 with a bit less at 3 and then less at 2 and none at 1. Used a high speed cordless drill and then an electric drill to spin up the oil pump, but it would not be the same as the engine driving it.

I have 2 of them ,one on each.
This one is on the 6. I have a different gauge for this still to be installed as my pressures will be 43-45 lbs.

Don Kelly

Don it sounds like you are running fuel injection at that psi range... Better get a harness to fasten yourself in to that rocket...
