Triumph TR6 - Oil Pressure

I am trying to sort through whether I have a oil pressure prob or not. Can I get feedback from members what your TR6 oil pressure looks like?
Initial Start up:
-idle pressure
-reving motor
Warmed up (10 minutes): temp guage between 1/4 and 1/2:
-idle pressure
-cruise at around 40mph
-speed at around 65mph
Thanks in advance for your feedback

Shawn 74.5

Thanks
Shawn

It is a 74 .I would sell it!! Not worth the trouble.!!!

Here are my readings which are pretty typical:

90+ psi at cold start high idle.

Stabilized temp about 60 psi at 2000 RPM and 25 psi at idle.

MPH doesn't mean much.. just RPM.

Mine is a newly rebuilt engine running 20W-50.

By the way...You should join up. It's not much fun to give info to people that never respond back. Not that you would do that.

Shawn is a semi regular . I think it has to do with the MIT thing that he can't join.

85-90 psi at cold start high idle.

Stabilized temp about 60 psi at 2000 RPM and 25 psi at idle.

running 20W-50.
I've not rebuild my original engine, but maybe the PO has done (something like)that. (owner for 5 years)

Tired engine:

80-90 cold start idle
40 warm at 2500 RPM
15-20 hot idle

Have seen no degradation in pressures. No smoke, knocks, etc.

Shawn,

For comparison...what are you oil pressure readings?

Some interesting info on oil pressure:

My original 73 TR6 owners manual (the little glove box version) states that the oil pressure at 2000 RPM, under normal operating conditions, should be
45-65 psi. Doesn't give an idle spec.

My boat has a Chevy 350 and the manual states that the oil pressure at 2000 RPM should be 30-60 psi. and the minimum oil pressure is 4 psi.

I hope I never see 4 psi!!

I get about the same as Don (113K mile engine)

80-90 cold start idle
45 hot at 2500 RPM
15-20 hot idle

Some smoke, no knocks; engine revs easily to 4000RPM.
Using 20-50W Castrol

All: Thanks for the feedback. I am significantly more relaxed now that I have seen what other folks have experienced with their oil pressure. Mine, since my last oil/filter change (same grade oil) plus plugs for some reason has been reading higher than what I recall previous. My new readings are as follows:
-initial start up at idle "high 90s almost 100"
-after about 20 plus minutes it drops to "27" at idle and runs on average around "75". If I jack up the rpms the oil pressure jumps quickly to 90. Seems pretty much what others have.

Don, Henry,

I have applied for membership twice and have a password, etc. For some reason I still get posted as a non member. If you have a webmaster email adreess or any suggestions on how to remedy this, I would appreciate it! The collaboration and assitance from members has been great on this site.
Cheers,

Shawn,

It was so long ago I joined, I don't remember how I did it. I'm already signed in via the link I've bookmarked...

I tried to work my pressure higher with 20/50 as well as replacement on the pressure releif valve. Believe it or not, the relief valve helped tremendously as mine was pitted and, I believe, sticking. I also have a line running to the head which may take a few pounds based on what I've read.

My belief is that, if the needle is off the pin, you're lubricated. Older tired Hondas will run at 5-10 PSI.

Glad to hear all is ok. Those are pretty good pressure readings. Has your engine been overhauled recently?

HP Henry Patterson

Henry,

The motor was rebuilt about 10k miles ago/10 yrs bpo according to receipts. I did pull out the oil pressure relief valve and looked it over. It seemed pretty clean with no gunk, etc. The whole thing is bizarre because the guage changed its readings immediately after the work I performed. As long as it reads like indicated above, after a long warm up, I should be ok

It appears you're okay with those numbers. If something plugged your oil gallery and caused a rise in pressure I don't think you would see the 27 psi that you're getting at idle hot. So, I don't think anything like that happened when you changed your oil. I do recall that new fresh oil does result in higher pressure readings compared to the old oil which has broken down some. That's what I've experienced.
