Triumph TR6 - Oil type

I usually use 20/50 oil in my 75 TR6 but when winterizing the car my mechanic put 10/30 in.
What is best?

I use 20/50 year round.

I use 20/50 summer and 10/40 winter. With all the reports out on the advantages of synthetic and blends, I am considering the switch on the TR6, as I have already made the switch on my other vehicles and motorcycles. Mobil 1 15/50 seems to be the oil of choice for the TR6 demands, but I have always used Valvoline, and have yet to have an oil related problem on any vehicle that I have owned, so it's hard to make the switch. I just wish Valvoline offered a 15/50 synthetic.

By all means, if you don't mind the $$ premium associated with synthetics, use them. I don't use syn in my 6 mainly because I prefer more frequent drain intervals with that engine that make their use uneconomical. I use Castrol 20W-50 exclusively year round. On the other hand, I have always use syn in my other vehicles because I don't mind an extended drain interval with them (10K miles or 1 year). They also don't spot the floor like my 6 does.

This thread just reminded me of a quote by Donald Healey. When asked what kind of oil to use in his cars, he replied "The cheapest you can get, and change it often to keep it clean." Or something close to that.

If you have good oil pressure with 10-30, it's OK. When it's below 0 degrees F, even 5-30 is OK in my humble opinion.

Since we up here in the great white north do not drive our Stewart Little cars in the winter, I suggest you drain the oil and put Castrol 20W-50 in her for the summer.
Think of it this way...you had an oil flush:)
