Triumph TR6 - Onward to question #2

Seems like the answer to # 1 is to check/replace the thrustwashers and to then drive it for a while to see what it's gonna need.

Question #2 is that I'd like to put in an overdrive. How do I know which one to use...? I don't get the impression that they are year specific, am I wrong? My TR's a 76.

Thanks guys & I hope I'm not getting too annoying with newbie questions...

J type was the OD available for that year

For close money you can do the 5 speed

Boy...I hope your pockets are as deep as that sinkhole in Fla.
DON KELLY

Don, you mean swap in a 5 speed trans from a different manufacturer? No, pockets aren't deep but I'm patient....Plus I have the GT6 to sell to help finance this.
jac clayton

There are many outfits selling the 5 speed implant.
Depending what you get for a J type the cost is close
DON KELLY

Don, I guess this is where I have to decide between staying stock or not. Tell me, do the 5 speed implants offer more than a stock OD would? Are they sturdier/stronger/easier to work on/better performance?
jac clayton

Ford and Toyota units, which tend to me bullet proof

Ya don't have the coolness of flicking it in and out of gear electronically but I think the final drive choices are better

And they won't tend to mark their spot like a dog does

Getting away from all that rain seems to have turned you into a comedian.

Where would one even begin to look for a J type?
Jim, any J type u pick up is 35+ years old.

Jim, like Rick said, your car would require a "J" type Laycock de Nomanville overdrive to be corrct for your year. Up to '72 Triumph used the "A" Type. Overdives are getting rare and therefore expensive. Figure $2500 to get one, get it rebuilt (it'll probably need it) then get the required bits to put it in. The other options Don mentioned are after market suppliers. A guy in Cal. (Herman Van Den Akker) makes a kit for the Toyota Celica Supra 5 speed tranny, the other in new England (DuPont Machine) makes a kit using the T5 tranny. I think there're about the same price (about $2k) but the t5 tranny comes rebiult to your gearing specs. Toy tranny are gettig harder to find now. They were made in the mid '80s to early'90s. I've had the Toy tranny for years now and am happy with it. If I were to do it again, probably do the T5. Both guy's are good to work with.

Rebuilt j types are all over.
The problem being "rebuilt"
If it is with a respectful supplier of said items I wouldn't trust many.

I have bought several J-types out of the UK... shipping included it was under $600. It took a day to rebuild and swap out parts (triumph 2500 sedan traansmission, shipped via transglobalexpress.uk.co,) Best shifting TR6 transmission I have ever driven, OD engages perfectly too. I probably lucked out with finding the right seller and a very good gear box to work with... OD was in terrific condition with minimal wear. We replaced all O-rings, cleaned and de-burred all parts, reassembled with new gaskets, Right-Stuff, and a few fresh bearings, and it has been perfect. The imput shaft needs to be swapped out and the output drive flange will need to be remachined...quite easily done.

The scarsity has gone up but they can still be found for under $1000 and keep the cars original... and can be easily wired up to provide 7 forward gears! Lets see a T5 do that...

7 forward speeds...with a "J" type???
DON KELLY

Rob

You gotta show how a J type gives you 7 forward gears.

Also isn't the input shaft one of those 12 or so items not available? (other than from a tranny that was OD).

Even $1000 is not bad for a J Type. You still have to come up with the longer input shaft though.

Rick

It can be done Rick,... just takes some fiddling.
DON KELLY

Hi Guys,

easy to wire a J type as an A type... order an A type lower harness and install a second switch in the shift tower... now you will have 1st, 2nd, 2ndOD, 3rd, 3rdOD, 4th, 4thOD! Great on that tristing section north of San Fran on the coast!

As for the Triumph 2000/2500 J type conversion to the TR6: it is quite easily doable and only requires minimal machining on the output flang. Input must be swapped out with the tr6 unit... takes about a day and a 6 pack
