Triumph TR6 - Paint Job

Guys,
I was just wondering what any of you guys paid for a complete painy job on your TR6? I had a collision with a 8 pt. buck that wiped out my front end of my 73. After a replacement hood, front valance, and grill (thanks to E-bay) and alot of hard work she looking pretty good again. Now comes time for the paint and I'm changing the color. I was quoted $3400.That paint shop has done good work for me in the past and I'm wondering what you guys think? Thanks.

For comparison, I'm ~$2K into a body off paint job and have not yet TOUCHED the tub!! Only the outer wings, bonnet and boot lid have been soda blasted, new metal where necessary, etch primed, fill primed and color sanded. I now have the tub ready to be blasted clean to the metal and the process above applied. Total estimate looks like it's gonna be in the $6-7K USD range, but that will include stripping top and bottom to clean metal, repairing/replacing all rusted/damaged metal, through the primers, several top coats of polyurthane enamel and clear coating. The boot interior will be acrylic enamal and the floor pans and fire walls in the interior will either be bedliner tinted body color or POR-15 with body color top coat.

You did not say how much you're covering with changing the body color, but if throughout, I'd say you're getting a bargain.

What about the engine bay? That is where a color change on a TR6 can really show up. If he's doing inside there then you have a deal.

For more comparison: I did all of my body work myself...stripped off paint, surface smoothing, and panel alignment. I then handed it off to the painter with everything stripped off of it (very little masking for him). He primed and painted with a base coat-clear coat urethane. No color change. That cost me $2200.00. That was for a high quality painting.

Could be high or could be low? If all paint is being stripped, body disassembled, all weatherstrips and grommets removed.....etc thats a deal!! If its a scuff and shoot while masking everything off then Maaco can do it for about $700 probably.

Quality repairs are never cheap....and cheap repairs are never quality!

I saved a lot of $$ by disassembling the car with the help of my buddy. We removed all trim, handles, locks, windshield frame, headlight pots, lights, bumpers, grille complete interior except dash, etc. Because the painter was a friend of my buddy I was able to help strip the paint with industrial razor blades. I still paid about $1000.00 Canadian for paint and other materials plus the painter's labor fee, $1100.00. We did not remove the engine therefore did not do under bonnet. I did the trunk compartment & he painted the underside of the lid. There are before and after pics on Charlie's "Members' Cars" site so you can see the extent of disassembly. I got a hell of a deal as he had 100 hours into the labor over 5 weeks in spare time so your $3400.00 quote, done properly, with some work by you is pretty good. I was quoted $1800 - $2000 for a quick 2-day spray job by a few other shops. Hope this helps.

Again, for comparison, I just got my car painted, complete bare metal job, minor dent repair and remove and replace both floors.

I stripped the car of all undercoating and disassembled everything, delivered the panels and bare bodyshell.

The painter sandblasted the tub and chemically stripped the outer panels, used epoxy primer then base and clear, for $5000. This included both sides of all panels, underneath the car, everything, but only the outer surfaces were wet sanded.

I think that was a good price as I had been quoted anywhere from $4000 to $13,000 for the job.
