Triumph TR6 - painting/dyeing

can you paint or dye the boot cover? I want to change my inetrior over to black, however its all blue, and instead of buying new door panels and boot cover, I would rather paint or dye them if possible. Thanks guys

No experience to offer but I found this on the web.

I am in the upholstery/canvas business. I have never seen a product capable of changing the original vinyl colouring. Usually the result is a hardened surface that greatly reduces longevity. Having said that, If someone has found something that changes a colour and maintains the soft texture, I would like to know.

My initial inclination is that the best way to change the colour of your interior is to replace all coverings.

Speaking as a chemical engineer (my long ago training),

Standard Dyes will not adhere well to vinyl. Paints will leave a stiff coating and will crack over time on those parts designed to flex (like the gear stick boot cover and seats). As John, I am not aware of any dye product that would work with vinyl.

I tried a carpet paint from Canadian Tire (here in Canada) on carpet and was unhappy with the result. It didn't coat well and eventually wore off.

Having said that the paint on my door panels from a previous car paint job where they weren't masked well was extremely difficult to get off.

Thus, you may be successful painting the non pliable, non flexing panels but they will be susceptible to scratches thus revealing the other colour underneath. So depending upon how much $$ and risk you wish to take you might be able to go that route but I would probably go for replacement of the flexible vinyl parts with the colour you want.

Let us know what you decide to do,
