Triumph TR6 - Places to Visit - Canada

Gang,

The wife and my two-year-old are looking to take a week and get out of the states for a while. We'll be driving from Jersey and are interested in seeing what the land up north has to offer.

Wondering of those on the board from Canada have any recommendations. We're not into clubbing, just relaxing rugged scenery and a bit of history.

I've been to Toronto for two days on business and spent two weeks in Nova Scotia which ended just after 9/11 when we had to drive the 18 hours back to Jersey.

We'd like to drive this time, but 18 hours is a bit much. Any advice on a week long trip would be welcome.

Thanks!

You can try the following ;

- muskoka region ( 100 miles north of toronto )

- georgian bay area ( 30,000 island tour / island-queen.com).

- algonquin park ( 200 miles north of toronto )

you can google most of these places to get a better idea.

let me know your thoughts

good luck

Don,
Ira is right.
Also how can you say no to the Canauck side of Niagara Falls (do the full tour)

While there, do "Niagara on the Lake" A lot of vintage cars congregate there on weekends.

In the same area do the winding "Vineland Route" a bit like the vineyards of Europe.

Lastly Toronto during the summer has "The Canadian National Exhibition CNE) the largest fair in the world. Once a year every summer.

Lastly to many beaches to mention.
In priority order:
Wasaga beach
Sauble beach
Grand bend
Sand banks
Sherkston (close to Niagara)
Depending how much money you want to blow the northern rustic resorts are AWESOME..!!...Deerhurst is a 5 star.
Hope this helps.

contact me if you need more

I agree with Marcello, the Niagara region is very nice to drive through, lots of quaint towns, vinyards etc

up north is great too..but avoid weekend traffic, its a zoo

Big ditto on Niagara on the Lake and the entire area between there and the falls. Check out the Shaw Festival. Or gamble at the casino down the parkway in Niagara Falls/Lundys Lane. If you are a history buff don't miss Fort George. You can get a good glimpse of the War of 1812 from a new perspective!

D from J,
because you are probably going to cross the border at Buffalo the Niagra region is your best bet as it's right there, lots of history, lots of wine tours, theatre, blah blah blah. But one of my favorite drives
starts about a 3 hour drive from the Buffalo entrance
over in Sarnia(another border crossing) then you follow the Lake Huron coast hwy #7 then turns into #21 then #13 anyway the whole coast is stunning, lots of beautiful places to stop shop eat and sleep. At the top of the Bruce Peninsula you can take the ferry over to Manitoulin island which has to be seen to beleived.
It is called Ontario's West Coast for a reason.

Wife and i just got back from Banff. Wonderful place. Bit expwnsive but what isn't now. People were so nice to us. Went to Quebec several years ago and also really enjoyed it. Canada is great. I forgot about the Vineland Route did it long time ago before married. Lot of great countryside and super nice people.

Don't be too influenced by all the southern Ontario folks on this board. Eastern Ontario is nice too. Straight up I-81 into Canada, then short trip down the 401 to Kingston. A beautiful little city with Old Fort Henry (and a LBC car show on Aug. 21), then north to Ottawa with the Parliament buildings, some great museums (including the brand new Canadian War Museum), the Rideau Canal and much more. Montreal is only 2 hours away and from there you can continue toward Quebec City or back home through Quebec's beautiful Eastern Townships.
M Burtt

Thanks all for your suggestions. We're thinking Niagara it a bit too touristy and the Canadian Rockies may be a bit too far to drive. Mr. Burtt's eastern Ontario suggestions sound tempting. We won't be travelling until September at the earliest, so we'll miss the show.

Would love to get together with you guys if logistics work out. It would be nice to show Rosemary what my six will look like once I finish putting it back together. Since we adopted our son, the car (my first child) has taken a "back seat" so to speak.

I've been to Canada before (standed in N.S. during 9/11) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't recall - does your currency have a beaver on it?

Thanks again!

Don,

You can't go wrong with any of the places suggested.
If you are travelling in September, there is a Triumph get together in Oakville Ontario (just west of Toronto and about 2 hours from Niagara falls) on September 18th and you can proabably meet a lot of the local BBS members there if you wish.

Rugged scenery is Algonquin or Muskoka. Canadian historical is Kingston and Ottawa. Quebecois Cultural is Montreal and Quebec. I come from Sarnia and can attest to the trip up the shore of Lake Huron.

Also if you want to get a way from it all you can take a one day train trip from Sault St. Marie Ontario into the Agawa canyon (only accessible by rail) or from Cochrane Ontario there is a train trip to Moosonee Ontario on the base of James Bay (Hudson Bay). Both are considerable drives to get to but are through the more remote countryside of Ontario. Cochrane is about 10 hours north of Toronto and Sault is about 7 hours North.

As for the beaver, it only graces our nickel. However you will want lots of loonies (our dollar coin with a loon on it) and toonies (our 2 dollar coin with a polar bear)so you can buy the gas to enjoy the scenary.

I concur totaly with Mike. But if you decide to come through our border via the Cornwall area bridge, maybe Kingston would be the first good stop (do the 1000 island tour) then make you way all the way west to the falls area (day 2 or 3) Then further west even more to the caost of lake Huron travel north.

Mike I see you live in G Town, I live in Heartlake. Ever attend the Wednesday cruise night there?

Hello,

I'll blow my own horn as I suggest you to come in province of Québec, mainly in Québec city with its old town from french inspiration of that era. You must come via Eastern township and find many nice countryside roads and small loyalist 's inspirations towns like North-Hatley and lakes. After Québec city you must go by the north shore of St-lawrence river by the scenic road and discover unknown places like port-au-persil. have an excursion to whales and go back by south shore, of course yoo will need to take a ferry at some point.

Cheers,

Marcello, tell me about the Wed. night cruise. I live in Erin, and just might like to join up with your group.

Don I have just been in St Jovite ,Mt Tremblant about 80 miles NW of Montreal and what a fantastic place. I did not drive from Florida though, Bloody expensive but the beer was cold, A fabulous race track and cant wait to return next year (TR heaven) It could be the best race circuit this side of the pond! with scenery to match

Here's a trip I make regularly and I love it:
From Jersey, through tyhe Catskills on Hiway 17 to Skaneateles in Finger Lake upper NY state, take the Rochester ferry to Toronto for the zoo. East on hiway 2 (or 401) with a stop at Sandbacks (Picton) and Hiway 33 to Kingston (with another quaint ferry). From Kingston on to the 1000 Island parkway through to Rockport and then back across the bridge to the US. Its essentially around the lake. With stop overs, it would take a week.
