Triumph TR6 - POR-15 experience

Over the Labor Day weekend, I used the POR-15 on my 1971's floor boards. I am generally pleased.

The floorboards had been previously worked on by someone. On the underside of the car, it looked pretty good, with only some surface rust. On the inside, with the carpet pulled out, it was a different story.

The prior fix had been a combo of a fiberglass matt in one area and some bondo in several others. After I got it scraped down, I had 3 holes about quarter size and maybe 3 pencil eraser size holes and then 5 or 6 pinholes. There wasn't any major active rust. None of it was really a structural problem.

After scraping and wire brushing, I prepared the surfaces as per the directions. The pin holes covered up easily. The pencil size holes filed up easily with the por-15 putty. Two of the larger holes appeared to be where someone had ripped out the seat slides or something--the back bolts one side of one drivers side slide and the same on the passenger side looked like that. They had fixed that with oversized washers, but I went ahead and used the POR matt to repair those.

It took more POR-15 than they claim, but that may be because of the humidity here. The finish is really solid and durable feeling and looking, but it isn't real smooth in places, because of some old surface pitting. I was going to paint it, but the surface isn't smooth enough, so I think I will just glue the carpets back down until I get around to replacing carpets in a few years.

I did do one black support member and it looks great--smooth finish, very nice. I plan on getting underneath and doing whatever I can reach, but as far as I know, there will be substantially less wire brushing down there, so it should be easier.

Its good stuff. Its pretty easy to work with, so long as your surface is prepared well. I may never replace the floorboards now, as long as I don't care that they are black under the carpets.

Sounds like you had fun. The only person who is going to look under the carpets is you.
How is the engine comming along?

Does anyone know if it can be sprayed and used as a primer under body color where can be seen?

Don,
I don't know the answer to your question, but in my LBC library, I have a booklet from the manufacturers of POR 15. I'll research and advise.

Don,
Yes the POR 15 may be top coated. It must DRY before you apply a top coat. Check out the web site...: http://www.por15.com/ There you'll find a link for a free catalog. Order up one and it'll tell you all sorts of good stuff about POR-15 as well as other products, rates etc.

POR-15 can be sprayed and should be topcoated if used on an exterior surface that is exposed to UV as it it is UV unstable. We shot a 914-6 (hey, they came pre-rusted from the factory) with it and it seemed to spray reasonably well.

Don, it has to be thinned out a bit to spray it, but it can be sprayed.

I did the frame from the engine compartment back to where the jack stands are today. It really looks nice, but it is nasty stuff to work with.

Rick, it is fun. I had scheduled today off from work because my wife and I were going out of town. Her mother had a medical problem, so she went up to Indiana. I took the day off anyway and had a pleasurable time cleaning up my engine compartment and part of the frame underneath.

Clive still has the engine, and we haven't ordered the parts yet.

John The POR 15 did a great job, Within a few weeks you will have performance to match the looks!. Thanks for the Beer! Clive

Shawn, I would estimate that it covers about half to maybe 2/3's of what they claim. On the underside, the only hard part of the prep is getting the caked on grease out of the nooks and crannies--I don't think I got it all yesterday, but mostly its in areas you can't see and it is a pretty protective covering in itself. Here's a link to their site:
