Triumph TR6 - Proper Color Coded Wiring Source

I understand that Dan Masters is off doing V-8 stuff so if there is anyone else on the BBS that has knowledge of a source of supply for proper color coded wiring, please advise. I need about 2' of G/N and G/Y to replace the wiring to my heater. G I've got but can't find the G with proper tracer. Thanks.

Thanks Berry. I had completely forgotten about those guys. When I called they did not have a kit for the heater made up but asked the year etc and said that they'd put one together with appropriate connectors attached and since it was such a small charge, (postage cost more) invoice me rather than pay the cc fee. That's service.

I've been away for a while, but I'm back for a couple of days, leaving on Sunday for Terre Haute, the V8 meet, and a two week vacation.

The folks at British Wiring are good folks to deal with, I highly recommend them.

I sent you an e-mail off-list, you should have it by now.

Doug- What ends could you possibly need? The lucar on one end and the other is soldered to the "what ja ma jinggy" that changes the speed.

British Wiring offered to put the female spade terminal on one end of the G/N and G/Y. I'll cut to length and solder the other end to the appropriate ends of the BIG resistor. The G wire has a male Spade terminal and I'm not too sure exactly where it goes, but it's the power connection to the motor. BTW, tested the motor tonight successfully and it does work. Just had to combine the G wire and one of the others to get a good circuit. BW also threw in a length of PVC sleeving to "wrap" the wires.

Just for clarification after reading Dan's email and DUH...thinking a moment. The Schematic for my 71 shows two wires going to the heater motor from the control switch; GN and GY with a black ground. My motor had three wires...G; G/kinda N, maybe gray and GY. Hmmm, three wires also, but one is Green that maybe should be BLACK!! Apparently the DPO or someone, maybe the Lucas GOD replaced the intended black ground wire with a Green one!!! I did not note the termination of the Green wire when I disassembled the heater. Figured the ground wire would be internal to the heater box. Dumb me!! This car does not seem to have been apart before, so my guess is the factory substituted the green wire because the black was not at hand and green was. There's a lesson here if that's true. What the book says MAY not necessarily be true. Witness Steve Pike's recent comment about Commission Plates being in error regarding body paint. Guess when all else fails, let common sense rule the day.

Even on a bad day in Coventry I do not think that G would be substituted for B. Simply G is always + and B is always -. Besides, the heater box is a SMITHS item. If the wiring was wrong then BL had the right to reject the heaters from SMITHS.

Another alternative to wiring changes is to use the "tracer" colour as the replacement then make note of this in your personal documentation.

I too would like to think that such an error would not have occured and even if so, inspection or QA would have caught it. That would be a huge no no in the business I support, BUT the facts remain that this heater box REALLY does not seem to have been dissassembled and wires replaced. The Green wire runs to the motor windings and is affixed in a way that just suggests to me that it's original. One other thing, some of y'all have commented that the heater box is held together with screws and rivets. I had NO rivets, only screws all about the perimeter of the box and they were all of the same size and apparent age. Another clue that the wiring was original. Likewise with the foam insulation or whatever it does; all appeared to be of the same type and era. Do you think Smith may have erred and BL chose not to pursue the issue? I got to check the birth certificate on this car and see what day of the week it was built. May say a great deal about it, and may help to explain some of the other oddities I encountered that are somewhere between a 71 and a 72!!

SMITHS (with an s) as you know, also made the gauges for our toys. SMITHS as a company still exists today and is a world wide organization. They are big.
I wounder if your heater box was built by SMITHS correctly and was intended for a positive ground vehicle...not sure if this thought will fly as the heater box would have to be able to fit into another make of car. Also, I think the days of positive ground vehicles had gone the way of "Dino" by 1971. It is a possibility that Coventry "accepted" the error and got a reduction in cost of the heater box???? THIS would not surprise me.
As I have said to you, I also have a little '72 in my '71 TR6.
At least you figured it out and adds to the list of stories about our cars:)
