Triumph TR6 - Quick way to ID late vs early head

I'm looking at getting a cyl head for a 74 short block I've got built. I need to know how to tell the differance between an new and old head aty a glance.
JT White

Early head intake ports are .563" (approx. 9/16")measured between intake ports.
Late head intake ports are .875" (7/8").
Needless to say, the intake manifolds and gaskets are not interchangable.

Thanks BTP....I guess my next question is how do I verify the block I have is the later.....it came out of a 74 donor car BUT that is no guarantee it's a 74 block.
JT White

Jim-The later block will have recesses around the top of the bores, unless they have milled off. Also, a check of the comm. # on the block will verify. I don't have a catlog handy, but TRF or Moss will have # by year. Either head can be used with either block with the appropriate head gasket.

Now comes the fun part. I've confirmed I have a 74 Block and I also have a 74 and up head gasket BUT there seems to be some holes in the block that aren't on the head gasket???
JT White

Jim-I think that is normal, maybe someone else can verify.

Yes I've changed the H gasket recently on a 76 and this is what I saw too.

I can accept this as "normal" but the question is why on earth would there be holes in the block that serve no purpose in their relation to the head?
