Triumph TR6 - Radia

Anyone have experience to share about VB radiators....I thought I read on this site to avoid whereas they are poorly made. Mine failed after less than 500 miles...they replaced it which is great but I am a bit suspect that the next one may be just as flimsy.

I have no experience with purchased rads. I decided to have mine rebuilt locally for about $270 Canadian in 2004. Didn't save much $ as the cost was about the same. (of course when I did it the US $ was 50% premium to the Candadian $). But I have put 6288 miles on it without a problem.

Don, Mike,
I have been stressed with reoccuring water problems...changed water pump several times...thermostat once...radiator twice...can't quite figure it out...bad parts or what...seems too coincidental... heating system works fine, so...Shawn

What kind of water problems?
DON KELLY

Mr. SSD,
Maybe its the water you're using!!

Wow Shawn, that is a lot of problems. My 71 has the original water pump with a grease fitting on it. Recored rad though. I think you just ran into a little bad luck and Murphy.

I run water weter in my system. I did have a rise in temp the other weekend but then I was stuck in traffic on a highway (QEW) heading to NOTL with outside temp around +30*C. First time I have ever seen the temp go above half way.

-The TR came with a 7lbs radiator cap. I inadverantly changed cap to a 13lbs and after a while I developed leak via the weep hole on the water pump.
-Changed water pump and no water leak for a while.
-Leak starts again through weep hole so changed pump again and realized through research that I could have wrong radiator cap on. Switched back to 7lbs and problem disappears for a couple thousand miles (two seasons).
-Leak starts again last Fall so changed thermostat. Leak disappears. Over winter (in storage) find radiator is leaking. Replace radiator with a VB radiator.
- No leak all summer. Temp guage runs consistantly just above a quarter. Discover weep hole leaking again via water pump. Replace pump. Fluid all clear when installed pump.
-No leak for couple of weeks (150 miiles). Last Saturday discover leaking radiator. Replace radiator with VB radiator covered under warranty. No leaking after 100 miles YET...
Note: based on research the TR should be running with a 13lbs radiator cap not a 7lbs cap but it automatically leaks if I use the 13lbs.

I think the early ones came with the lower #. Might be wrong though.
DON KELLY

Don,
you are correct although there are lots of opinions on 7 vs 13....interestingly enough at our local TR show this summer there were a lot of TR owners that were using 14lbs with no problems.

Pretty sure mine has a 7 but that was 11 years ago.I can't remember what I had for breakfast this AM
DON KELLY

7 lb is what I remember for my 69.
