Triumph TR6 - Rear Brakes

Hi Folks

Just started putting a "Box of Bits" (I got as is from DPO)back together. I was rebuilding the rear brakes (after sandblasting, priming & painting). I followed the installation of the brake springs directions in the BL manual, but they do not look right.

So my question to the forum. Should the springs be on the inside of the brake-shoes or on the outside? If anyone has a picture that would be great.

A reminder to everyone, take pictures at every opportunity.

Les, I just replaced my wheel cylinders. My brake springs were on the INSIDE of the brake shoes. Bob

Check out the Haynes Manual. Excellent drawings and photos of rear brake installation. Better than the Bently manual, I think.

I have gone through the archives and it would seem that the springs are fitted to the inside, however some have fitted them to the front.

If you have Roger Williams "How to restore a TR6" page 140 plate 13-15 it looks like the spring is on the front.

So now I am more confused!

Les, I'll check references tonight and advise. I have Roger's book, the BL, Bentley, and Haynes Manuals. What I don't have is a rear brake together. Wasn't even together when I got the car!!

When I got my car, the springs were on the front, and this forced the shoes to sit at an angle to the drum. I replaced them at the back (using new shoes - the old ones were worn at the strange angle) and everything looks "right". Getting the springs on is a pain, though. If you have a helper, it is pretty simple to get everything lined up and springs installed without the adjuster in place, then pull the shoes apart at the bottom, put the adjuster in, fasten up and bib's your uncle.

Inside is definitely correct. I've done this a couple of times and while they are a b*tch to get installed it gets easier with practice. I recall setting the springs on the shoes and finessing the shoes on with the springs in place with a couple of screwdrivers; not too hard. While you're there, check your studs that hold the hubs to the aluminum trailing arms.If over torqued they strip & spin out and you'll need Heli-coils. If so, buy Heli-coil brand (at twice the price of the generic version), prep the holes with the correct drill bit as specified; check previous threads in Archives for drill bit size. Many posts from satisfied users. Take your time as you are into a major resto and do it right. Starting engine rebuild, finally this weekend and will e-mail you some pics. Top Down TR6 II is great - will e-mail on that too, With Chris's donor frame you are on your way to TR6 heaven so again, take your time.

In general, the springs on drum brakes are almost always on the inside, since this keeps the shoes from swinging outward and trying to engage the drum when you don't want them to.
