Triumph TR6 - REAR HUB

Hi Guys

I just finished watching my mechanic rebuild my rear hub...it's all tight now but he wants me to install it and see if there is any side to side play with the wheel on...if not then it's tight enough I guess.
He'd prefer to know if there is a setting to go by.
Is there a torque setting ? I cannot find any info in the Bentley or Haynes book.

The guy who did my hubs ( been doing TR hubs for 40 years ) wants me to bring the hubs back to him, after they have a couple of hundred miles on them, to re-set the bearing float. According to him, you get better service out of them this way........................

What made you have the rear hubs rebuilt? What sort of indication is there that this should be done? I have not even put 5 miles on mine so I would like to know what to look for.

I had a "HUM" sound from the drivers side which was more noticeable with the top up but even with the top down it got louder when coming off a ramp in a right hand turn..putting extra load on the bearing..we pulled it apart yesterday and the inner bearing was shot, it was scored.
I've attached the diagram. I put it all back together last night so now I wait for a nice dry day to test it !!

The other thing that should be mentioned here Gordon is that the repair and dis-assembly of the rear hub is NOT a do-it-yourself project. Interestingly enough, the sign of a good hub bearing is that it feels tight to turn.
Do not worry about that yet...get the car to driving point and have fun this summer.

What about the front? My rotors spin freely with the pads out. I mean I can spin them, by hand, faster than I can count the revolutions and the they slowly come to a smooth stop. Do they need to come apart and be repacked? I am working on a ton of stuff here but I figure now is the time.

Yes it's ok for the fronts to spin freely without pads, when the pads are in their proper place there will be some extra resistance because the pads are just touching the rotor.
Yes the rotors can be taken apart easily and cleaned then re-packed with fresh grease ..wear a latex glove with a blob of grease in your palm and force the bearing into the blob as you turn it to get it into all the little rollers. If you say they spin great and there is no noise I'd say they are fine as is.

As for the rear...there is the resistance of the bearings in the hub and the drag of the brake shoes against the drum. When the rear brakes are properly adjusted it's very hard to get more than 1 to 3 revolutions by spinning the wheel by hand..of course it's all in how hard one can spin the wheel.

Your front discs/hubs should spin freely on the stub axle.
There is a lot you could look at and check for wear and replace and clean and re-grease and.....well I think you get the idea here.
IMHO, you should look at the things that are a safety issue and determine replacement if necessary. The big one is obviously brakes. At the least you should replace the brake fluid and then do a good bleed. There are obvious things that will definitely require your attention in order to get the car certified. You might have to replace the entire brake line system. I have seen this on cars that are half as old as your 6.
Greasing your front hub bearings is a nice Saturday morning job in the spring. If you grab your front tyre with it off the ground and you feel no play in it and it spins freely then leave the bearings till a Sat. morning. Check the front shocks...do you get any bounce when you press the front corner down a few times? If so then replace the shock. The back shocks are more a case of check the oil level in them and top them up. If you get bounce after a top up then most likely a rebuld is in order.

I could go on and on here Gordon. Like I said, deal with the stuff that has to be done to pass a safety.
That is a start.
